Climate change and population growth pose threat to global food security, a senior Thai official said Monday.

Apichart Jongskul, Secretary-General of the Office of Agricultural Economics under Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives made the remarks on the sideline of the two-day Asia- Europe Meeting (ASEM) high-level conference on food security.


"According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world's population will grow from 6 billion at present to 9.5 billion by 2050 and demand for food will increase by 70 percent while the land is decreasing," he said.


To maintain global food security, all countries should protect farm land, increase fund on technology to lift food production, he said.


"Food security, climate change and agriculture are not single problems which should be addressed all together."
