Since early 2011, big technology groups including Apple, Google and Amazon have been providing content services on the basis of cloud computing technology. The cloud technology based apps have been used by Amazon as a “competition weapon” to attract people to Kindle Fire.
Earlier this year, Apple announced iCloud app, the content service package for mobile phones. iCloud takes the responsibility of storing and synchronizing the content among users’ Apple devices. When iPhone users want to update new songs on iStore, or film script and messages, the content will automatically added into the users’ store on mobile phones. After that, the content will be updated on the devices the users have such as iPod, Macbook or iPad, while users do not have to pay fees.
At present, Apple offers 5GB free, while is users need bigger capacity, they will have to pay money.
Amazon has also provided many types of services on mobile phones, such as Cloud Drive or Cloud Player. The retailer helps users update and share information among devices, while they do not need to use old methods any more.
Amazon now offers 5GB free to every user, while they will have to pay one dollars for every additional GB per annum.
Amazon has turned Kindle Fire into a device with wonderful attractiveness, not only because of the low price of 199 dollars, much cheaper than iPad, but also because of the capability to explore the book, film and music stores, provided on the basis of cloud computing.
Nokia, Black Berry and Samsung have developed the products with the technologies that support the services running on the basis of cloud computing. However, they have not announced services yet.
Vietnam: market still hasn’t got players
At the Chief Information Officer (CIO) conference held recently in Hanoi, Duong Dung Trieu, Managing Director of FPT Information System (FPT IS), said he believes that cloud computing will be used widely in Vietnam no sooner than by 2015.
In the immediate time, cloud computing technology solution firms are trying to persuade digital content providers and network operators to provide the services on the basis of cloud computing.
Representative of a cloud computing technology development group in Vietnam said that Vietnamese telcos seem to be too hesitant to provide content service packages on the basis of new technology.
Mai Trong Ba from the product development division of Samsung Vietnam (Savina), said that network operators have great advantages to drive consumers to use cloud computing technology-based services. They now also have 3G technologies which will create favorable conditions for designing content packages on the basis of new technologies.
“The network operators that pioneer in using cloud computing technology in providing content services will have more opportunities to succeed,” Ba said.
In fact, network operators have not paid much attention to technologies, because the digital content business mostly comes from content providers. Meanwhile, content providers always have to think carefully about the investment efficiency before designing new products.
As such, due to so many reasons, domestically made cloud computing-based apps still have not come out. Meanwhile, users have got familiar to the apps provided by foreign firms, from Google docs to music and film provided by Amazon.
A representative of a network operator, who asked to be anonymous, said that a lot of network operators are planning to develop services on the basis of cloud computing, but in the immediate time, they need to carry out trial run of some apps.
“We have not had any completed digital content package for mobile phone, so we still cannot introduce our services to users. Let’s wait some more time,” he said.
