Maritime authorities seized a barge carrying 200,000 tonnes of smuggled lubricants on Friday following a search at sea between HCM City and Tien Giang Province.

It was discovered on barge CT-02342 (Phuc Thanh Barge) by the Coast Guard, Marine Police and the customs' contraband combat force, a spokesperson for the Tien Giang naval force said.

The captain of the barge failed to produce any documents for the lubricants.

The Marine Police also found on the barge two people who were not part of the crew.

The barge belongs to the Phuc Thanh Manufacturing and Trading Co. Ltd. headquartered in Can Tho city's O Mon District.

Authorities are investigating further.
