High waves isolated a dozen households in Ro village on Saturday night sweeping away 100m of embankment made from rock and sand bags.

The violent tide flooded the house of Dao Duc Chung, one of the residents of the coastal village, located in Tuy Hoa city's Phu Dong commune in Phu Yen province.

Chung said he and his neighbours were ready to evacuate if the tide got stronger.

The tide also filled Da Dien Port with sand, reducing its depth to 1m.

Previously, Phu Yen Province's People's Committee proposed the Government fund the upgrading of the embankment in Ro village, as well as Xuan Hai commune and Song Cau town.

In other areas of Phu Yen province, students skipped class for the last two days due to heavy rain, which also raised the water level of several rivers including the Ky Lo and the Banh Lai and flooded 130ha of rice and 20ha of vegetables, causing estimated losses of VND2 billion (US$95,000).

On Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai province, the rough sea prevented boats from departing, forcing hundreds of visitors to stay on the island and preventing officials from going home for the weekend, said vice chairman of the Ly Son People's Committee Pham Thi Huong.

Dang Quang Son, director of Sa Ky Harbour's Management Unit, said that the storm had shut down sea traffic for the last three days, cutting off the flow of supplies.

Under the influence of strong cold air yesterday, Quang Ngai seas were rough with 2-3.5m high waves and level six wind power. The province saw 50-100mm of rain.

River level was expected to rise to the second warning level on the Tra Cau River in Duc Pho District and first warning level on the Ve River. Local authorities and residents were told to be aware of flooding and land erosion in mountainous areas.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (NCHMF), it would be cold during the night and early morning in the north of Viet Nam, but sunny in the afternoon.

The Centre also predicted scattered rain from Da Nang City to Binh Thuan Province and sun in the Central Highlands and south.
