VietNamNet Bridge – The Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam (DRVN) has announced a toll station that was robbed three weeks ago had the appropriate amount of cash on-site.

The probe into Giau Day toll station came after an armed robbery on February 7 in which two thieves made off with VND2.2 billion (US$94,500) in cash, all of which had reportedly been collected that day.

Public concern was raised over the amount of cash at the station, as previous reports by the Viet Nam Expressway Corporation (VEC) stated the station’s daily revenue reached no more than VND1 billion ($42,900).

The DRVN inspection team checked all account books from January 28 to February 8 and found VND13.2 billion ($567,000) was collected over the 12 days, the same as reported by the VEC.

The corporation deposited more than VND10.5 billion into bank accounts in the period and VND2.2 billion was robbed on February 7, while VND465 million was leftover at the station.

These figures matched the ones reported by the VEC before, said a DRVN representative.

“The toll collection activities including ticketing, money collecting, book checking and bank transfer complied with regulations,” he said.

“The numbers of vehicles passing the station matched with the reports on daily revenue from January 28 to February 8 by VEC,” he said.

The two armed robbers were arrested in HCM City’s Sai Gon Railway Station on the evening of the same day as the robbery. Police recovered VND2.1 billion.
