VietNamNet Bridge – Mr. Danh Ut Hien, 54, an official of Vinh Quoi commune in the southern province of Soc Trang, failed the high-school final examinations eight times. He has just finished the ninth exams yesterday, June 4.

Some elderly examinees took the high-school final exams 2012 at Mai Thanh The high-school in Nga Nam district, Soc Trang province, including Mr. Hien.

Hien is a senior official of Vinh Quoi commune, Nga Nam district. Nearly ten years ago, he attended a continuing education class but he failed in the final exam that year.

Since then, this man took part in annual final exams but he failed fall. Last year, he took the exams with his daughter, but the father kept failing. This year is the ninth time.

Waiting in front of the school to pick up her father, Hien’s youngest daughter said that after the father finished the third subject, they calculated that Hien could get ten marks for three subjects. “My father said that math is the most difficult subject and he was afraid to get one or zero marks,” she said worriedly.

After the history exam, Hien seemed to be sad because he could not answer all questions. This was also the state of mind of another examinee, Mr. Le Van Hoang, 54, an official from Vinh Bien Commune, who has also failed the exams eight times.

“Previously I was busy with office and family affairs so I did not have time for reviewing for my exams. This year I and Mr. Hien prepared very carefully but the opportunity is perhaps only 50 percent. I’m afraid of math the most. I used to have zero mark for this subject,” Hoang said.

At Nguyen Thi Minh Khai School, in Soc Trang city, the oldest examinee is Mr. Son Tong, 47, vice chair of the People’s Council of An Ninh commune, Chau Thanh district.

Tong said that his family was very poor so he did not have an opportunity to go to school. His family sent him to a pagoda. He left the pagoda over ten years later to become a hamlet official. When he became a commune official, he attended a continuing education class in 2008 but he failed in the final exams. He failed in annual exams since then.

“If I pass this exam, I will register for an in-service university course, specialized in finance and accounting. This is the great dream of my life to bring fame to my family,” Tong said.
