Beloved musician: Thanh Tung, who composed many love songs, died on Monday after eight years of illness.

Tung was a leading composer of Vietnamese music. His songs won people’s hearts.

Born in 1948 in the coastal province of Khanh Hoa, Tung moved to Ha Noi at the age of six.

He graduated from North Korea’s Pyongyang Conservatory in 1971 and worked for Voice of Viet Nam from 1971 to 1975. After the reunification of the country in 1975, he returned to HCM City, and contributed to the establishment of HCM City Television’s orchestra. He also worked as conductor and art manager of the Bong Sen (Lotus) troupe.

Tung had an attack in 2008, leading to hemiplegia. Living with the illness, he continued to be in good spirits. He continued to attend concerts that featured his songs, even though he could only smile but not speak.

Diva My Linh said she loved singing Tung’s songs because they expressed the composer’s positive view of life. His beloved songs include Hat Voi Chu Ve Con (Singing with the Little Cicada), Mot Minh (Lonely), Loi To Tinh Cua Mua Xuan (Spring’s Avowal of Love) and Loi Cu Ta Ve (Returning to the Old Path).
