Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan presented the special national relic certificate to officials of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau. 


On March 23, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan awarded a Special National Relic certificate to the Con Dao Prison of the southern province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

In the wars of resistance against the French and the U.S., communists and patriots were prisoned here. During the 113 years of existence, Con Dao Prison has been the landmark for the indomitable struggle, resilience, iron will of tens of thousands of communists in the struggle against the French colonialists and the U.S. imperialists. About 20,000 Vietnamese patriots, including Hero Vo Thi Sau, died here.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said that, the recognition of Con Dao Prison as a special national relics not only has the pure sense in conservation, but also creates new impetus for the development of the island.

Nhan expected that in the coming time, Con Dao will become a modern tourism center of the country and the region, a conservation area of historical value and a diverse sanctuary and an outpost of national defense and security.

On May 10, 2012, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a decision on the classification of special national relic for the historic prison of Con Dao (in Con Dao District, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province).

Along with Con Dao Prison, other famous monuments are also ranked as special national relics: the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh), Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Hanoi), Con Son – Kiep Bac (Hai Duong), Ho Dynasty Citadel (Thanh Hoa), Yen The Uprising (Bac Giang), President Ho Chi Minh Monument in Kim Lien (Nghe An), President Ton Duc Thang Monument in Long Xuyen (An Giang), Pac Bo (Cao Bang), Tan Trao (Tuyen Quang), the base of the Central Bureau (Tay Ninh Province) and Trang An - Tam Coc - Bich Dong (Ninh Binh).
