VietNamNet Bridge – Some of the most outstanding Vietnamese musical works created since the beginning of the last century will be performed at a concert at the HCM City Opera House on Sunday.

HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera's Viet Nam – Our Heritage, Our Love concert will feature among others Nhung Ky Niem Que Huong (Native land's memories) and Tinh Ca (Love Song) by Hoang Duong, Dan Chim Viet (Viet Birds) and Song Lo (Lo River) by Van Cao, aria Co Sao by Do Nhuan, Canh Chim Bao Tin Vui (Bird's Wings Bring Good News) by Dam Thanh, Dat Nuoc Tinh Yeu (The Country, the Love) by Le Giang, and Nguoi Ha Noi (Hanoian) by Nguyen Dinh Thi.

Tran Manh Hung's folk suite Dong Chay (The Flow), which was premiered last year, will also be performed. The work is an arrangement of 21 famous folk songs from all parts of the nation to denote a journey from childhood – which is likened to a stream – to old age.

The concert, led by talented young conductor Tran Nhat Minh, will feature leading voices from the city's chamber music scene – sopranos Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga, Tran Hong Vy, Duyen Huyen and tenor Pham Trang – and the HBSO Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

"Modern Vietnamese music had its origins in around the 1930s when composers were exposed to the seven-note scales from western music traditions and started to use them to compose original Vietnamese music," HBSO said in a press release.

The first generation of composers to achieve fame included Nguyen Van Tuyen, Le Thuong, Doan Man, and Le Yen.

Composers like Hong Viet, Van Cao, Do Nhuan, Nguyen Dinh Thi, and Nguyen Xuan Khoat started to get formal training and proved their exceptional quality by contributing timeless works to the Vietnamese musical repertoire.

The following generations of composers, including people like Do Hong Quan, Dang Huu Phuc, Nguyen Thien Dao, and Tran Manh Hung, continue to develop, create, and introduce Vietnamese music on the international stage.

Tickets to the concert, priced at VND400,000, 350,000, 200,000 and 80,000 (for students), are available at the venue.
