Former striker of the Vietnamese national squad Le Cong Vinh.

The goal was scored in Vietnam’s match against the UAE on July 8, 2007, in a fixture which opened the 2007 Asian Cup. The veteran striker was able to beat the offside trap before delicately lobbing the ball over the onrushing keeper to score Vietnam’s second goal and ultimately secure a 2-0 victory.

According to a poll conducted on the AFC’s official website, Vinh comfortably beat off a challenge from a goal scored by Alexander Geynrikh of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals, with the Vietnamese legend recording a spectacular 96% share of the votes.

Moving into the semi-finals of the AFC’s Asian Cup Greatest Goals Bracket Challenge, Vinh’s goal will be up against a strike by Widodo Putra of Indonesia for a place in the final round.

In the other semi-final, Sunil Chhetri of India will compete against a strike by Abbas Chahrour of Lebanon.

The Asian Cup Greatest Goals Bracket Challenge is an online event run by the AFC in the build-up to the 2023 Asian Cup in China.

The poll selects a total of 32 iconic goals from Asian Cup history before pitting them against each other in order to allow fans to vote to decide the tournament’s greatest ever goal. VOV
