Construction Ministry proposes name change to Ministry of Construction, Urban and Housing Development

The Government has suggested changing the name of the Ministry of Construction to the Ministry of Construction, Urban and Housing Development, said PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a recent conference to promote the 13th Party Congress Resolution.

Introducing the 10-year socio-economic development strategy for 2021-2030 and the direction and tasks for the next five years (2021-2025), Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that development of infrastructure, regional economic areas, marine economy and urban areas in the rural region are part of the development breakthroughs in the coming time.

"These are important areas, the fields that we have a lot of potential and strengths and also the fields that create breakthroughs in growth," said the Prime Minister.

In terms of infrastructure, he said that in the mid-term plan of 2021 - 2025, total public investment is VND2.75 million billion. There are 336 PPP (public private partnerships) projects, mobilizing over VND1.8 million billion, while PPP will be promoted further.

The Government will focus investment in key national infrastructure projects, especially transport, energy and digital infrastructure. The government strives to have 5,000 km of highways by 2030 and major modern key airports.

The head of the Government also added that the National Assembly and the Prime Minister agreed to build a coastal route from South to North.

Regarding regional economic development, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that it is necessary to promote the advantages of each region and localities and build specific mechanisms and policies to promote linkages for regional development, and select a number of regional urban areas with special advantages to build economic and financial centers. The new development models in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and some localities should be encouraged.

Regarding marine economic development, PM Phuc said that sustainable development of the marine economy is associated with national defense and security and the goal by 2030 is to have 28 coastal provinces accounting for 65-70% of the country’s GDP.

He said that urban development and new rural construction are two issues of particular importance to the sustainable development of the country. Vietnam will have to speed up, improve the quality of urbanization, build green, civilized urban areas.

He also revealed that the government had asked the Central Office to rename the Ministry of Construction to the Ministry of Construction, Urban and Housing Development.
