Several Vietnamese artists have allegedly paid bribes to be awarded the title of People's Artists.

In the wake of rumours that bribes have been paid for medals and artist titles, artists have come forward to allege the stories are true.
One artist, who asked not to be named, said many in the artistic community were shocked by how many recipients of the People’s Artist title did not deserve the honour.
Some respected winners have indicated they will renounce their titles in protest.
The informant said some recipients had paid around VND20 to each backer to be recognised as a Meritorious Artist or the higher People’s Artist.
Another source alleged judges at artistic events are being bribed.
Music critic Nguyen Quang Long said, “Artistic events are like 'messy markets' for recognition."
