VietNamNet Bridge – On the morning of December 21, cracks appeared on the floor of Thu Thiem tunnel across the Saigon River.

The cracks appeared quite thick. Some of them were only a few tens of centimeters but some others were a meter long. In addition to new cracks, there were many old cracks.

According to a construction expert, the cracks might have appeared previously and in the recent maintenance. Meanwhile, the HCM City urban transport construction management board, the investor, said they would check the cracks and have a reply soon.

In August, several dark stains and prolonged cracks appeared on the roof of the middle chunk of Thu Thiem tunnel and they were filled with glue.

The investor said these were mildly soaked spots within the limits of the contract specification, which appeared after the tunnel was put into use and the State Council for Construction Work Acceptance checked and allowed to be repaired during the warranty period.

In late November, the investor confirmed that the soaked spots in Thu Thiem tunnel decreased remarkably and the remaining soaked spots would be definitely fixed.

Thu Thiem Tunnel is the most important item in the East-West Highway project of Ho Chi Minh City. The tunnel across the Saigon River is the most modern of its type in Southeast Asia, with a length of 1.49 km, width of 33 m, height of 9 meters, six lanes for cars and motorcycles, and two exit lanes.
