This was discussed during a quarterly press briefing on January 7, following public concern over the discovery of toxic bean sprouts sold in markets and supermarkets.

Accountability and regulatory oversight

Deputy Minister Tan confirmed that the market surveillance authority has been tasked with closely monitoring the circulation of such products and collaborating with interagency teams to conduct thorough investigations.

However, he emphasized that ensuring food safety falls under the jurisdiction of the agriculture sector.

“Market surveillance agencies are responsible for tracking product circulation and working with relevant authorities to review and regulate violations,” Tan added.

Earlier, the Dak Lak provincial police launched criminal proceedings against four individuals from Buon Ma Thuot City: Lam Van Dao, Vu Duy Tu, Nguyen Van Quynh, and Nguyen Van Hao.

The individuals face charges of "violating food safety regulations" after authorities conducted raids on six production facilities, seizing over 20,357 kilograms of bean sprouts treated with 6-Benzylaminopurine, a prohibited growth stimulant.

This chemical, commonly used to accelerate cell growth, poses severe health risks, including:

Developmental defects such as low birth weight, hydrocephalus, and other congenital disabilities.

Long-term exposure through inhalation or skin contact can exacerbate these effects.

Consuming large quantities may result in fatal poisoning.

Actions by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development

Following the incident, the Department of Agro-product Quality, Processing, and Market Development (NAFIQPM) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requested the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to submit a detailed report.

The report must include:

Information on local food safety management for violating facilities.

Actions taken to address these violations.

Measures for product recall and tracking.

NAFIQPM also emphasized the importance of reporting results promptly to prevent further incidents and safeguard public health.
