The five accused included Malaysian national Farid Bin Abdullah, 43, Luu Thi Ngoc Hien, 42, As Na Wy, 24 and Bui Thi Mai Lan, 41.

According to the court's indictment, Abdullah instructed his long-term Vietnamese partner, Nguyen Thi Bich Chi, 23, to bring some young Vietnamese girls to Malaysia to work in bars as prostitutes.

Chi then allegedly asked Hien to find the girls and paid him VND8.4 million (US$400) for each girl. Hien recruited her partner As Na Wy and her acquaintance Bui Thi Mai Lan to assist her.

From June to October last year, Abdullah received 16 girls in HCM City and paid more than VND125 million (nearly $6,000). Fourteen were subsequently taken to Malaysia. The girls came predominantly from Dak Nong Province's Gia Nghia Town.

Abdullah was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment. Hien, As Na Wy and Lan received 15, 14 years six years behind bars respectively.

The police seized VND79 million ($3,700) from the members as evidence.

Chi is now in custody in Malaysia for violating the country's laws. Vietnamese police are applying for her extradition back to Viet Nam for further investigation. Two other accomplices of the gang are now under arrest after time spent on the run.
