According to Nguyen Van Thach, head of the ministry’s Traffic Safety Department, the road will initially get more speed breakers and barrier raillings. More sign posts of the speed limit for trucks and passenger buses will be placed on the accident-prone sections of the pass.

The ministry has asked relevant offices to check the “super sloping” section on the pass, which is located in Dak Glei district in the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Kon Tum.

The pass has been named the “Pass of Death” by the local people and drivers as it often causes serious accidents, according to the newspaper.

Several accidents have occurred here since the beginning of this year. A week ago, two accidents on the pass killed four and injured 38 coach passengers.

To reduce the number of accidents, the local government has asked the transport ministry to invest in upgrading some sections of the pass.

The ministry and the National Committee on Traffic Safety had visited the pass to investigate its condition.

“The pass is an important road linking central and Tay Nguyen provinces,” said deputy transport minister Le Dinh Tho.

“There is a need for urgent solutions to reduce accidents on the road,” he added.

The Road Department is required to submit a master plan for upgrading the Lo Xo Pass to the ministry within two weeks to carry out the plan this year.
