VietNamNet Bridge – The HCM City Cargo Transport Association has begun publishing the names of truck drivers who violate safety and trucking regulations on its website.

This is an effort made on a trial basis to increase public safety awareness, the association’s secretary general Thai Van Chung said on Wednesday, Feb 6.

The list of violators appears on the association’s homepage at www.vantaihcm.com.

Violations included overloading vehicles, unsafe driving, and unlawful collection of transport fees.
The violations not only caused harm to transport companies but also increase the risk of traffic accidents, Chung said.

“Goods transported by trucks and container trucks often have high value yet the drivers of these vehicles frequently have higher incidence of accidents,” he said.

“A lack of awareness and professional skills can cause unanticipated consequences,” he added.

While helping transport companies to protect their assets, publishing truck drivers’ names should encourage them to preserve their reputations by increasing their awareness of and efforts to ensure traffic safety, Chung said.

Regarding concerns that posting the names violated the rights of drivers, Chung said the publication only served as a reference for transport companies considering whether to employ drivers.

“Transport companies make their own recruitment decisions and the association does not interfere,” he added.

The Central Highland province of Dak Lak has also set up an interdisciplinary mission, including representatives from local transport, health and financial departments, as well as local police, to test truck and coach drivers in the province for the use of drugs.
Any drivers found to have taken illegal substances would be suspended from driving and handled in accordance with the law, the province has announced.
