The Military team player defeated Nguyen Duc Tuan of Hai Duong 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8 in the final match of the men’s singles event.
Dat walked away with VND60 million (US$2,700), the largest cash reward for table tennis in any local tournament. “I prepared carefully for the tournament and I am happy and honoured to win the gold medal,” said Dat who won a silver at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in 2015.
In the earlier match for the bronze medal, Nguyen Anh Tu of Ha Noi won 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 over former national champion Tran Tuan Quynh of Ha Noi T&T.
Dinh Quang Linh, head of the tournament’s organising board, said the competition would be held every year and that the organisers would work to improve it in the future editions and hope to welcome more supporters.
