Lo, 24, from the Dao ethnic group, lives in Phìn Ngan Hamlet, Trinh Tuong Commune, Bat Xat District.

According to the court’s indictment, on August 9, on the way to catch rock turtles, Lo beat Tan Ta May with a wooden stick and dropped her in a nearby pond, piling rocks over her body.

He also killed May’s two-year-old daughter, Tan Mai Phuong, and May’s six-year-old niece, Tan Thuy Chi, drowning both in the pond.

Then Lo got into May’s house and saw May’s other daughter, Tan Thuy Van, almost one month old, sleeping on the hammock. Lo took her to the stream, drowned her and placed rocks over her body.

After killing the four family members, he ransacked the house and took objects worth over VND1.3 million (US$58).

Lo escaped to the forest, where he hid for almost a month before he was taken to the police by his family.
