Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh has suggested the United Nations enhance its central role in concerted efforts to deal with challenges to global security and peace while meeting with Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous in Hanoi on June 10.

At the reception, Defence Minister Thanh glowingly spoke of the importance, purpose and significance of the visit by the UN official in the context of Vietnam's strong commitment, active preparation and readiness to send forces participating in UN peacekeeping missions to join the international community's efforts in contributing to a peaceful and prosperous world.

He said he believes the Under Secretary General would pay more attention, support and assist Vietnam in engaging effectively in UN peacekeeping operations.

Thanh also appreciated the UN support for Vietnam’s preparation and participation in UN peace-keeping mission.

Since 2005, Vietnam and the UN exchanged views on issues related to Vietnam’s preparation and deployment of forces participating in UN peacekeeping operations.

Regarding the current regional and global situation, the Defence Minister said to maintain peace and security in the region and the world, all countries should strictly comply with the UN Charter, international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on Law of the Sea, respect independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, settle all disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law without threat or use of force.
