On the morning of October 26, during a group session, Deputy Prime Minister Phoc spoke with VietNamNet on tax collection related to e-commerce platforms, including Temu.
During a session on economic and social affairs, National Assembly delegate Hoang Van Cuong (Hanoi delegation) warned about the influx of low-cost goods from cross-border e-commerce platforms, which could dominate the domestic market and stifle local manufacturing.
"Recently, Temu’s advertising has been pervasive, with discounts of up to 70% compared to standard prices, drawing Vietnamese consumers to its platform,” Cuong remarked.
Cuong warned of the significant risk to local production, as these low-cost products could crowd out the domestic market, forcing local businesses to close. He called for immediate action to regulate these products, focusing first on quality, origin, and traceability. "Can the quality of these goods be guaranteed?" he questioned.
He also suggested reviewing the import tax exemption for items valued under 1 million VND, given the surge of cross-border e-commerce goods entering and potentially dominating the local market.
Lastly, Cuong urged tighter administrative controls over these goods, advocating for stricter import processes to safeguard domestic production.
