VietNamNet Bridge - The Sung Duc Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Duc district has just unveiled four largest jade Buddha statues ever been made in Vietnam.

Carved from a 3.5-ton translucent green stone block imported from Canada, the statues weigh 60-70 kg and have a height of 0.8-1 m each.

Completed after 5 months by 50 sculptors, they are gilded and encrusted with nearly 2,000 artificial diamonds.

Since being put up at the pagoda, the statues have drawn thousands of faithful Buddhists from all walks of life to pay homage, prompting the monks to prepare thousands of vegetarian meals every day for the visitors, said Thich My Thuan, head of the pagoda.

Sculptor Nguyen Van Toan who supervised the making of the statues said they bear typical features of the Vietnamese Buddha which always has 2 eyelids, broad shoulders, big hands and a sharp nose.

Sung Duc will house the jade sculptures until August 14, when they will be moved to their next stop at Hoang Phap Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City’s Hoc Mon district.
