VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam’s young weightlifter Ngo Son Dinh won gold on the first day of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games on Monday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Dinh won in the men’s 56 kg category after lifting a total of 262 kg.

His strongest opponents were Chomchuen Natthawat of Thailand, who lifted 240 kg, Polak Frantisek of Czech Republic (225 kg) and Perales Garcia Jose David of Spain (210 kg).

Dinh showed his strength with a series of strong results leading up to the event, including lifting 249 kg on his way to a bronze medal in a previous edition of the same event and lifting 258 kg to win gold at the 2018 Asian Youth Olympic Games.

The 17-year-old from southern Tien Giang Province finished the snatch competition better than expected by lifting 114 kg, while his main rival Natthawat managed 109 kg.

He finished the clean and jerk competition at 138 kg, and then continued to push the limit to 142 kg and 148 kg. Natthawat succeeded at 130 kg but failed at 148 kg and 154 kg.

In 2010, top Olympic lifter Thach Kim Tuan also won the 56 kg class with total result of 256 kg.

In women’s 44 kg competition, Nguyen Thi Thu Trang won silver after lifting 147 kg. Katherin Oriana from Venezuela was champion with a total of 162 kg.
