With a manageable distance from Hanoi, fresh air, and pristine natural beauty, Dong Cao Plateau in Bac Giang Province has emerged as a popular “healing retreat” for visitors seeking camping, cloud hunting, and nighttime stargazing.

Dong Cao Plateau – “The sloping field” of Bac Giang

Located approximately 150km from Hanoi in Thach Son Commune, Son Dong District, Dong Cao Plateau has become a favored destination in recent years. Its lush landscapes, diverse terrain, and convenient setup for outdoor activities have drawn in nature enthusiasts.

According to local residents, Dong Cao features vast, interwoven grasslands dotted with rolling hills and large, uniquely shaped rocky formations. Stretching beyond these grasslands are seemingly endless forests that add to the plateau’s charm.

With its location perched against the mountains and overlooking basin-shaped valleys, Dong Cao has become a beloved escape for campers seeking peace and restoration.

At an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, the plateau also serves as an ideal spot for cloud hunting and observing the Milky Way at night.

Many travelers agree that Dong Cao is one of the rare destinations suitable for visits throughout all four seasons. However, the most ideal time is during late autumn and early winter, from September to December, when the weather is dry, cool, and slightly chilly. This makes it perfect for setting up tents, hosting bonfires, and enjoying outdoor barbecues.

A camper’s perspective

Hoang Minh Duc, a freelance photographer from Hanoi, camped overnight at Dong Cao in September and was impressed by its expansive, tranquil, and refreshing atmosphere.

“It’s a perfect spot to enjoy nature. As long as it doesn’t rain, visitors can have a great time here anytime,” Duc shared.

His group traveled 150km from Hanoi to Dong Cao. Although the route is accessible by both cars and motorbikes, it features steep slopes and winding roads.

To reach Dong Cao, visitors can travel from Hanoi to Bac Giang City, follow National Highway 31 through An Chau Town, Van Son Commune, or An Lap Commune. Alternatively, locals suggest heading toward Cam Dan Bridge in Son Dong District and then turning left.

Dong Cao currently offers no dining or lodging services. Visitors planning overnight stays must bring their own camping gear, tents, and cooking supplies.

“You can either bring your own equipment or rent it from local residents near the base of the plateau. It’s best to contact them in advance for proper preparation,” Duc advised.

For a memorable experience, visitors are encouraged to check the weather forecast beforehand and pack essentials such as tents, sleeping bags, camping gear, food, drinks, and personal items. Importantly, visitors must ensure they leave no trace by cleaning up thoroughly and refraining from littering or lighting fires irresponsibly.

While visiting Dong Cao, travelers can explore other scenic spots in Son Dong District, including the Khe Ro primeval forest, Khuon Than Lake, and Ba Tia Waterfall at the foot of Yen Tu Mountain. Another nearby highlight is the ancient Bac Hoa Village in Tan Son Commune, Luc Ngan District.
