Doctors in Can Tho City General Hospital wrongly removed both the kidneys of a 37-year-old woman patient on December 6 when only her left kidney needed to be surgically removed.  
37-year-old Ho Cam Tu was taken by her husband to the Thoi Lai General Hospital for a clinical examination. Doctors in the hospital said that her kidney had failed and that she needed surgery and should be moved to the Can Tho General Hospital for an operation.

At Can Tho General Hospital, doctors said that Tu’s right kidney was functioning properly but her left kidney had failed and needed to be removed.

On December 6, Dr. Tran Van Nguyen, head of the Kidney Department operated on Tu to remove her left kidney.

Soon after the surgery, Tu’s husband noticed his wife’s health was still not good and decided to take her for an ultrasound test. He was shocked to discover that both her kidneys had been removed and he immediately rushed her to an intensive care unit.

Tu’s husband complained to the hospital and on December 8 Dr. Nguyen met Tu’s husband and explained the case.

Dr. Nguyen explained that during the surgery he had accidentally torn Tu’s right kidney and could not stop the bleeding, so he had to remove both her kidneys. He said that it was important to save the patient from heavy bleeding which was not stopping during the surgery.

Dr. Nguyen said that he would pay the overall cost of Tu’s hospital expense as well as cost of dialysis treatment. He also offered to give additional support to the patient.

Tu’s husband told a Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper reporter that he has three children and with his wife in such critical condition she cannot now work for a living. His family will face more difficult times without her help, he said.

Le Quang Vo, director of the Can Tho General Hospital confirmed the incident with an SGGP reporter and said he was waiting to gather all information and would then take strict action against the doctors who had conducted the surgery.

Gov’t offers direct recruitment of outstanding university graduates  

Outstanding university graduates can now choose careers as civil servants with the government without sitting for civil service entrance examinations as per a new decree released by the government.

As per the decree, university graduates excelling in their studies have a choice of working with government bodies in communes.

The chairperson of a district people’s committee will arrange for a post in a government agency for students passing with good grades from local universities or with fairly good degrees from foreign schools. The students will be employed in their related field of study.

Students who pass with average grades and with five year work experience in a field required by a government body will also be recruited without a civil service entrance examination.
