VietNamNet Bridge - On the morning of December 4, a 36-year-old pregnant woman in Vu Thu District, the northern province of Thai Binh, suffered from sudden severe bleeding at home. To save her, doctors decided to perform a surgery at home.
The surgery at the patient's home.
After the surgery, the patient was transferred to the Thai Binh Obstetrics Hospital in stable status. The rare operation had the participation of doctors from the Thai Binh Obstetric Hospital, the Thai Binh General Hospital and the Emergency Center 115.
Dr. Le Hai Duong, from the Medical University of Thai Binh, who participated in the surgery, said that at about 6am on December 4 the woman complained of abdominal pain. Around 30 minutes later, she began bleeding.
Her family caught a cab to take her to the hospital but the woman was fainted. The family called the local medical station and medical emergency service 115.
"We were informed of the incident at 7.20am, at 8.10am, a surgical team was present at the patient’s home. We decided to carry out the operation on the spot because the patient had lost about 3 liters of blood due to internal bleeding, suspected of ectopic pregnancy. If the patient was moved, she would have died," Dr. Duong said.
The surgical team piled two tables to make the operating-table. The operation took place in the absence of supportive equipment as well as light and sterile conditions. The patient has the rare blood type of AB so doctors had to take some blood from her family members.
"We had to use the balloon instead of respiratory machine and used cotton to absorb blood in the abdomen and squeezed it to a pot because we did not have a blood vacuum. Thankfully, after almost 2 hours of surgery, the patient was out of danger," Dr. Duong recalled.
After being transfused with 1,000ml of blood, the patient was transferred to the Thai Binh Obstetrics.
Earlier, the woman confirmed herself pregnant by a pregnancy test stick. She visited a doctor for an ultrasound scan but the fetus did not move into the uterus yet. The doctor told her to return after a week. One day after the appointment, the ectopic fetus was damaged.
