Tay Nguyen University in late 2015 announced that more than 1,000 students of the school were reprimanded for their poor learning records. Later, 400 students were forced to leave the school. The others are still on the alert.

At the HCM City Food Industry University, 1,000 students are expelled from school every year. The majority of them are students following 3-year training and non-full time courses.

The HCM City Banking University reported that it forced 201 students to leave school and gave warnings to nearly 100 students when the first semester of the 2015-2016 academic year finished.

The HCMC Agriculture and Forestry University forced 280 students to stop studying and reprimanded hundreds of others.

In September 2015, the Van Hien University forced 129 students to leave because of their learning results in 2014-2015. These included 101 students following university (4-year) education and 28 others following 3-year training courses. The students had a zero GPA.

The news that thousands of students have been expelled from school could indicated that schools are committed to not taking capable graduates.
According to Hoang Minh Son, president of the Hanoi University of Technology, about 10 percent of students have to leave school because of learning results every year.

The HCM City Transport University expels about 100 students every semester.

Nguyen Tan Vui, President of the Tay Nguyen University, said it was ‘quite normal’ that 1,000 students may be expelled from school.

“The information should be considered good news. It would be dangerous if even incapable students can graduate from universities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Son from the Hanoi University of Technology, thinks leaving schools, to some extent, is a good choice for students.

In the past, schools applied a year-based training mechanism, under which students would go to the next form after one year and fulfill the training curriculums designed for one year.

Weak students would have to repeat study if they could not satisfy the requirements. Many students had to repeat study for many years, but still could not fulfill their programs.

Therefore, Son believes that it would be better for students to realize their low capability soon and leave school.

Tran Phuong, president of the Hanoi Business and Technology University, noted that Vietnamese schools follow an unreasonable method: they set strict requirements on input students, while they loosen control over the quality of output students. As a result, many incapable students can also have bachelor’s degree.

Phuong stressed that the low quality of university graduates was one of the reasons for the high percentage of unemployed university graduates.
