VietNamNet Bridge – Buying a monkey to make bone glue, a man in the central province of Quang Tri discovered that the monkey is an endangered Douc langur which is named in the Red Book of Vietnam. The man gave the langur to the authorities to release it back to the forest.

In the afternoon of February 20, Mr. Le Van Thanh, head of the forest protection station of Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, said that the station had received a rare langur from Mr. Le Van Trinh, from Tan Hop commune. This is a male langur, weighs 6.5 kg, with the scientific name as Pygatharix nemaeus.

According to Trinh, the seller told him that this was a normal monkey so he bought it for VND3 million ($150) to make bone glue.

When discovering that this is not a normal monkey but a rare one, Trinh handed over the langur to the authorities.

The Huong Hoa Forest Protection Station is caring for the langur to ensure its health before releasing it back to the forest.

Douc langurs are on the verge of extinction. This species lives in the Bac Huong Hoa and Dakrong Nature Reserves in Quang Tri province.
