Ass. Prof, Dr. Ha Duyen Chau, former Director of the Institute of Geophysics said under the 11-year cycle, the time from late 2012 to early 2013 is the boom time for magnetic storms.

However, last year, magnetic storms took place weakly, with about 30 storms. According to Dr. Chau, it is more likely that this year will be the time of explosion of strong magnetic storms.

"As expected, the number of magnetic storms in 2013 may be up to 40 to 45, at the most powerful levels of G4, G5 or about 400 - 500 nT (ano Tesla is the unit measuring the intensity of magnetic storms)," said Dr. Chau.

Mr. Chau warned, magnetic storms with the intensity of 200 nT or more will affect human health. There are magnetic cells in bone, heart and brain, so people with a history of cardiovascular, nerve, and bone diseases are very sensitive to magnetic storms. They may feel slightly tired, tense, and pain in bones.

In industry, when magnetic storms occur, there will appear very large induced currents running in transformers of the 500 kV transmission system. This current can ruin the automated relays of transformer stations, affecting the operation of power stations and power supply.

Magnetic storms can paralyze the operation of artificial satellites and even attack the power grid on the ground. The scientists calculated that magnetic storms reach the peak in the 11 year circle.
