The directorate started a pilot project allowing online renewal in December. After just a month, 628 applications were submitted and 418 driver licences were renewed, with most of the administrative process completed online.

Quyen said last Friday that the pilot project was a success, and the directorate had received positive feedback from users.

After submitting requested information online, drivers will receive tickets with the time of their appointment, saving them time that would be spent waiting at the Government office and waiting for their applications to be processed. Then at the office, they'll just need to pick up their renewed licence and provide proof of the information they submitted online.

Citizens must arrive on time for their appointments, which will be sent to them via email and text message.

The renewal process will take just two hours – significantly shorter than the current five-day waiting period.

In cases of invalid applications, explanation and guidance will be provided as to why requests were denied and what information needs to be added.

Quyen advised citizens against showing up late, especially near closing hours (10am or 15pm), because offices may not be able to handle a large number of applications at the same time.

The directorate urged the Ha Noi and HCM City departments of Transport to finish installing network infrastructure and provide staff with licence renewal software training before mid-January, so the online service could be implemented in February.

Other cities and provinces' transport departments will also receive training on the new software.

The directorate's goal is to make renewing driver licensces online available across the country by the end of the second quarter.

For the time being, the directorate can only renew licensces that it issued.
