VietNamNet Bridge - Misspelled English mistakes on diplomas have been made by university education establishments, causing graduates to be rejected by employers.

Nearly 100 pharmacy graduates of the Binh Duong Polytechnic Intermediate School returned to school on June 14 to ask the school’s board of management to grant degrees again, as they contained mistakes.

The graduates complained that they cannot find jobs with the degrees which are rejected by employers and notarization offices.

Instead of degrees with the words “Major in Pharmacy Technician”, they received “Major in Farmacy Technician”. Nearly 100 degrees had the same mistake.

LTN, a graduate attending a training course at the school in 2013-2015, said the head of the school, in May, after hearing the complaints about the mistake, released a decision on correcting the degrees, clearly pointing out the misspelling. 

However, the solution of the school has not been accepted by the students. They asked the school to grant original version of degrees instead of the degrees with correction, saying that the school must take responsibility for this and that this is not the students’ fault.

However, the demand has not been satisfied. LTA, a student of the 2012-2014 training course, said she and other graduates could not get new degrees as requested when they returned to the school on June 14.

“I have to work as a factory worker, though I graduated as a pharmacy technician just because of the mistake on the degree,” she complained.

Nguyen Giang H from Dong Nai province complained that even a small drug store would not employ her because of the degree with a mistake. 

Also, Tuoi Tre newspaper quoted an expert saying that the word “rector” for the head of a vocational intermediate is inaccurate. Rector should be understood as the director of an institute, or head of a college or university.

Another mistake is made when translating the name “Truong Trung cap Bach Khoa Binh Duong” into English as “Binh Duong Polytechnic”.

Regarding the name of the location, instead of “Binh Duong”, one would see “Binhduong”. 

“I cannot understand why the same word is written in two different ways on the same degree released by an education establishment, an official member of the national educational system,” a member commented on an education forum.

In late 2014, local newspapers reported that 150 graduates of Quang Trung University in Binh Dinh province received degrees with “Major in: Contruction Engineering Technology” (“s” was omitted in “construction”).

Eight months ago, Sai Gon University admitted the mistake in 216 degrees granted by the school to information technology engineers. In the degrees, “infomation” was written instead of “information”.
