VietNamNet Bridge - 1,500 delegates from around the country are about to be honored at the 8th National Patriotic Emulation Congress, which opened in Hanoi on Monday. The theme will be ‘Solidarity, Dynamism, Creativity, and Emulation for the Fulfillment of Socio-Economic Development Goals for the period of 2011-2015’.  

 

They are from various patriotic emulation movements, the ministries, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, plus central and local organizations. Of the 1,500 delegates, 338 are heroes of labor and the people’s armed forces.

 

In addition, 1,001 people will be recognized as outstanding individuals and representatives from several organizations in fields including society, economics and sport.

 

The oldest delegate is Professor Vu Khieu who is 94.  The youngest one, a 10-year-old student named Tran Ngoc Diem Huyen, who is in grade 5 from Hanoi. Professor Ngo Bao Chau is one of the main guests for the congress.

 

The congress will review emulation patriotic movements, as well as the state’s policies on rewards over the past five years. It will also highlight examples and ways of improving the quality of emulation and rewards, for the 2011-2015 period.

 

Good friendship

 

The 8th National Patriotic Emulation Congress comprises the attendance of 52 delegates, from Ho Chi Minh City, including two grade 8 students, Nguyen Quoc Dat and Le Thanh Vu. They are both from Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School, in Hoc Mon District.

 

Le Thanh Vu is an unlucky boy, whose legs and arms are too weak to move. When he was in grade 3, he could not travel any distance.  Vu’s family is very poor and could not provide him with any proper medical treatment, like physical therapy.

 

As a result, over the last five years, Vu has attended school with assistance from his parents and friends, especially Nguyen Quoc Dat.

 

Dat said that when in grade 3, he saw Vu legs were badly disable, so he decided to help him. Everyday, Vu’s parents would drive him to school, while Dat would carry him to any class he needed to attend.

 

Vu often gets the title of good student at the school each year and would like to become computer programmer someday.

At the congress, the only representative from the HCMC Department of Education and Training is the Nguyen Thuong Hien High School.

 

Accepting her award, the principle of the school Ho Cam Thanh, said that her school had overcome many difficulties to provide teachers with a high salary, so that they could work more effectively.

 

Nguyen Thuong Hien has provided extra courses in foreign languages and computer skills, in order to assist teachers at the school earn more money. In addition, students have been equipped with knowledge and various living skills, she said.
