Nguyen The Son is an accomplished international photographer known for the creation of photo relief photography, for which he won the talent prize for his master’s degree in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China in 2012. The Son’s work has always centered on examining the transformation of his country on the road to modernity.

Exhibition “Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition” features 8 relief photography works from recent photos, as a response to Nguyen The Son’s 8 photographs of the facades of houses that William Crawford taken 20-30 years ago. This dialogue between the past and the present, between two photographers born three decades apart, one an American war generation and the other, a young Vietnamese born post-war in 1978, is a poignant examination of the past contrasted with the wonder of the astonishing transformation of this ancient city.

Exhibition “Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition” is an event in the framework of International Photography Biennale Photo Hanoi’23.

Exhibition “Hanoi 1985-2015 In The Years Of Forgetting”

Opening: Wed 26 Apr 2023, 06 pm
Exhibition: 27 Apr – 20 May 2023, 09 am – 07 pm
Manzi Art Space

William Crawford was one of the first photographers to gain access to postwar Vietnam in 1985, and he continued to return at regular intervals for over 30 years. As an American witnessing the devastation and sorrow of war, he was compelled to show the humanity that coexists with deep suffering. Sensitive to the subtle nuances of everyday life and the customs of the people in this exotic land, he documented the daily life of the Vietnamese as it evolved over three decades.

This exhibition includes 18 street life photos taken from 1985-2015 by William Crawford. This unfolding of 18 street life photos will be exhibited as a journal of time passing in the Manzi Art Space. Viewers will see the country as it emerges from a collective subsidized economy of limited goods and services to one of the most successful economies in SE Asia.

On December 14, 2020, at 11:22:48, I was lying flat on my back, being rolled into an MRI machine at the VA hospital in West Roxbury, MA.

My neurologist had ordered an MRI scan of my brain to examine whether there was any shrinkage or any symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The thirty-minute procedure revealed nothing more than normal aging shrinkage. Upon leaving, I requested and was given a DVD containing hundreds of scans of my brain. Looking at these intricate MRI slices immediately piqued my interest. However, these photographs only depict the physical appearance of the brain and not its content. This concept captivated me. Our brains are structurally similar but contain vastly different information.

I have put together the recent MRI scans with the prints I created between 1976 and 1980. These collages, figurative or abstract, all come from inside my brain and begin to reveal both its form and content. It is not yet clear how this all fits together, but I believe it will be apparent to me sometime in the future.

Exhibition: 24 Apr – 31 May 2023, 10 am – 06 pm
Chula Fashion House

* Curators: Nguyễn Thế Sơn, Suzanne Lecht
** Artist: Diego Cortizas

Diego Cortizas, also known in Vietnam as Diego Chula, is a Spanish designer and multidisciplinary artist who lived in Hanoi for almost two decades. As a photographer, he was fascinated by reflections, discovering in them a parallel world waiting to be revealed by the lens of his camera. A series of photographs taken by Diego wandering through the architectural structures of Wat Pho in Bangkok has been selected to exhibit at the Diego Chula Cultural Garden.

The exhibition allows the audiences to enrapture themselves in the fleeting moments captured by the artist that appear as surreal instants in time. With the help of fellow photographer and dear friend Nguyen The Son, these photos are printed onto lacquer, a process discovered by The Son as he experimented with the possibilities of printing on a myriad of surfaces.

These photographs offer a tribute to the endless creativity of Diego Chula and his ability to give expression and life to the hidden beauty of what surrounds us.

PORTAL EXHIBITION x SAEKO ANDO

De la Sól, Sun Life Flagship
No. 244 Pasteur Str., D.3, HCMC

“The expressiveness of natural lacquer is healing my soul”, shared by a fan of the art works of contemporary lacquer artist Saeko Ando Top of Form

A revelation to artist Saeko Ando, she realized that she could use lacquer to help others feel what I feel. She’s lucky to live close to nature and to feel the energy of nature. This is why the name PORTAL was born!

A portal is an entrance, often to a building that’s grand and important, such as a cathedral or a castle. She shared, “I hope my artworks will become portals through which you – my audience – can enter the state of peace and joy that I feel when channeling the energy of Nature.”

The “PORTAL” exhibition marks the first time that such a large collection of Saeko Ando’s lacquer artworks on acrylic are displayed together. To create such extraordinary artworks with natural lacquer is extremely time-consuming. Saeko produces very few pieces each year. She has only shown small numbers of works at previous exhibitions, making this event special.

For many years since 1988, C. David Thomas, a Vietnam veteran, an print-maker and art educator who, by their efforts, has made great and important contributions to initiating and sustaining activities that healed and built the mutual understanding in many aspects between the two nations that used to have a common painful past.

The exhibition showcases selected graphic works from the series of C. David Thomas during his struggle with Parkinson’s syndrome in recent years, which has been identified as one of the consequences of exposure to Agent Orange, which was probably infected during the war. The print series is fully presented in the “Finding Parkinson’s” group exhibition of David Thomas and Boston’s printmakers in Danang Fine Art Museum. The exhibition also showcases the works of 21 Vietnamese artists who have been invited to participate in art and culture exchange programs and activities organized and supported by IAP over a period of 30 years since 1989 to 2019. Their relationship with David Thomas and IAP went far beyond the artistic professional exchange, but about sharing common sentiments and spiritual values: the beauty of arts, the healing and building emotions through aesthetics, the companionship in life, the sympathies for the past and the bright vision of the future.

The works of C.David Thomas displayed in this exhibition are part of the “Photo Hanoi 23” – The first international photography biennale in Vietnam initiated by the French Institute in Hanoi.

Exhibition “The Gardeners”

Until May 2, 10 am – 09 pm
Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), B1 – R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, 72A Nguyen Trai Street

Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) cooperated with Young Artists Club – Vietnam Fine Arts Association to introduce the exhibition “The Gardeners”, with nearly 100 works of 90 artists. Talented young artists from all over the country, diverse in forms from painting, graphics, sculpture to installation and video art.

The Gardeners was originally borrowed from the poem book title “The Gardeners” by poet Rabindranath Tagore. The journey of discovery, creation and artistic work is sometimes very similar to the work process of gardeners that requiring patience, calmness and a peaceful attitude in harmony with the currents of the nature. Because sometimes, artists have not found what they want in art, but the process of artistic work leads them to creative and successful values that they are not looking for. Tagore’s poetic, erudite, philosophical lyrics have inspired young authors’ latest works.

Exhibition “Harmonize”

Until Apr 25, 09:30 am – 06 pm
V-Art Space, Floor 1 Ciputra Club, Bac Tu Liem District

After the success of two solo exhibitions “It” (2005) and “The Corner to See” (2014), visual artist Tran Trung Thanh remarks on another decade of hard work with the “Harmonize” exhibition. The artist’s journey in search of answers to questions about history, the development of society, and the intersection of life, science, and art is recorded via more than 30 oil paintings. Accompanying the exhibition is artist Vuong Pat Cam and his impressive works about Hanoi.

Meticulous, persistent, and profound are what we can say about the process of Tran Trung Thanh creating his artworks. Since the Jeunes Regard competition for young artists in 2004, Tran Trung Thanh’s painting style has become more and more bold.

Neither surrealism nor hyperrealism, Tran Trung Thanh encodes his notions of life into unique characters. Each painting presents a social issue of Vietnam or the world along with questions about history, international diplomacy, and the intersection of life – science – art.

“Harmonize” is the third solo exhibition of artist Tran Trung Thanh.
