In a diverse and innovative art environment, the intersection of cultures and artistic styles always brings new and creative experiences. The exhibition “The Language of Water” by artist Nicolás López is a testament to this and a meaningful new chapter in his artistic journey around the world.

“The Language of Water” is the statement of Nicolás López’s characteristic painting technique and the title he chose for his series of personal exhibitions and workshops in many countries worldwide. Watercolor works tell the inner spiritual stories of indigenous people and cultures, exploring the diversity of the world through artistic journeys from Peru to Europe, Asia, and now to Vietnam.

VINA/V is a VJ performance presenting the three-month-long collaboration between RMIT digital media students and V2X academy alumni. This collaboration was part of the course “Specialisation 2: Live event” led by lecturer Nguyễn Hoàng Giang.

In this course, students conduct research and develop visual content inspired by the theme “Vina”, a shorthand representing Vietnam. “Vina” not only encompasses Vinahouse, a music genre that motivates club culture in Vietnam, but also art and cultural elements that are attached to “Vina”. Students are encouraged to interpret these cultural elements by conducting studies on traditions, cultural norms, street culture and social issues.

The event aims to celebrate the powerful influence of Vietnamese street culture on digital media activities. The performance will combine the audio (music) and the visual (presentation) elements.

Attending VINA/V, you can immerse yourself in the world of VJ loops inspired by architectural styles, colour palettes, dress patterns, fascinating objects, prominent persons, and even food from the streets of Vietnam. VINA/V hopes to join the audiences in appreciating and reinterpreting Vietnamese aesthetics in a contemporary and relevant manner while delving into its rich historical roots through literature, archive documents, and artworks. Let’s embrace the concept of kitschiness and create a captivating fusion of tradition and modernity in this event.

By combining dynamic rhythms and enticing visual presentations, the performing artists hope to deliver a new interpretation of Vietnamese culture in the context of the global contemporary culture.

“New Wide Open Road”

This Open Studio by the young and talented artist Trang Nguyen is her first solo showcase dedicated to all her teachers and friends who became a significant part of her life during her 5 years spent at Vietnam University of Fine Arts. As its name suggests, “New Wide Open Road” is also Trang’s heartfelt goodbye as she has decided to move to Thailand to embark on a new meaningful journey for a new chapter in her life!

Trang Nguyễn graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art (Khoa Hội hoạ) at Vietnam University of Fine Art, specializing in lacquer in 2022. She’s very much fascinated by the technique used and special visual effects achieved in lacquer paintings. She wants to especially dive deep into the art of mastering Vietnamese traditional lacquer (Sơn Ta). She believes art is a medium to discover the unknown and express her artistic identity and individuality.

Trang’s creations explore the beauty of nature and human, together with the connection with different life forces through an elusive expression of lacquer using a refined visual language.

In April 2022, she was awarded 3rd prize for her lacquer artwork participating in the Student Exhibition 2022, organized by Vietnam University of Fine Arts.

“Reality is often more obscured than our expectation – and art is the reflection of that obscurity. It is the individual uniqueness that makes art diverse and make each of us an universe within. In my eye, for every point of space-time, things affect us in an unique way, thus each object of art calls for an unique form of expression. In this exhibition, the eye is a symbolic object – it symbolizes our perception of the world, as much as the eyes of the world observe our actions.”

Artist Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh proudly introduces her third solo exhibition “A Perspective”, where you are invited to discover artworks guided by her own intimate thoughts and emotions.

Art tour: A case of walkthrough

A case of walkthrough is part of the exhibition “Mind & Machine”, led by coordinator Nguyễn Tú Hằng, taking the audience on a stroll to view and learn more about the artworks presented in the display. Through this tour, the research, experiementation and exploration of artists and researchers will be explained and extended in both the physical and digital spaces, and audiences will have the chance to interact with art and enjoy the experience, while reflecting on the relationship between the mind and machine.

The art tour will also feature the special participation of contemporary dance artist Lyon Dat Nguyễn, invited by artist Cam-Anh Luong. The intervention performance, led by Lyon Dat Nguyen, serves as a platform for research and reflection on various rituals associated with human beliefs within the artwork “TrustIn_AI” by Cam-Anh Luong. This performance combines the exploration of traditional rituals with the examination of AI bias, prompting encouraging contemplation on the dissemination of AI bias and its representation through human body movements. The work is site-specific and aligns with the theme of the Mind & Machine exhibition.

Flowers are a sign of mutual care and a way to spend time, for personal and collective joy as well as for appreciation. They create and trigger emotions within ourselves and draw us closer together.

In a two-day performance, together we will arrange flower bouquets. Each arrangement tells a different story: of family relationships, of the first memory of a flower, the farewell to loved ones, a chance encounter on the street. Visitors are invited to translate their own anecdotes into flower arrangements. At the end of the flower workshop, an installation of flower arrangements will be created that will bring memories back to our consciousness for a brief moment.

Who decides on the progress of history?
Who gets to continue writing history? And what happens to the stories that get lost along the way?

Flowers, vases and tools will be provided. Visitors are welcome to bring and use their own materials (scissors, vases, etc.). Interpretation in English and Vietnamese will be provided.

Within the framework of this program, in addition to the 2-day performance, there is an artist talk which takes place at 18:00, 18.11.2023, at the same venue. It is a great chance to meet and exchange with the artist Pham Minh Duc, with the participation of our guest, Mr. Tran Luong, Director of Center for Art Patronage and Development (APD).

Speaker: PHAM, Minh Duc (born in Schlema, Germany, 1991) is an artist based in Berlin, Germany. Working in the fields of Visual and Performing Arts, Pham Minh Duc examines the subject of identity on the intersection of gender, race, and class.

In 2019 he graduated with a Master’s degree in Exhibition Design and Scenography at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe and studied performance and design theory as a guest at the Berlin University of Arts.

In June 2023 Work Room Four turned 10. We are celebrating this remarkable milestone with this exhibition. It has been an amazing decade of creating, making and learning, our journey has been enriched with a wealth of memories, invaluable learning processes and incredible projects and partnerships. 10 years on, we stand with an even greater passion to continue championing and promoting art and design from Vietnam to a wider audience. “Now we are 10” is an exhibition designed to unite artists, designers and community.

The exhibition is divided into two parts, the first element is an open submission showcase of over 70 pieces of decade specific work by our creative network of artists and designers.

The second component is interactive and invites our audience and community to consider creativity as a subject matter through a series of installations – What is creativity and why is it important?

Despite it has not even been a month yet since the Japan Hour 2023 ended on October 8 with great success, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (The Japan Foundation) proudly present the “Japanese Film Festival 2023” – an annually held event for movie lovers in Vietnam. “At The Intersection: A Book Showcase From The Netherlands” is a travelling exhibition initiated by Matca with the purpose of presenting a selection of publications from the Netherlands using photography as their main medium. The titles on display were curated in collaboration with The Eriskay Connection, a studio for book design and publishing house focused on contemporary storytelling at the intersection of photography, research, and writing in order to provide new and necessary insights into the world around us.

The 18 showcased publications had travelled a great distance to reach Vietnam, conveying a diverse range of topics such as: The landscape of maritime transports in the Netherlands as sketched from personal interests in “I’m Looking for a Ship”, looking for clues of women’s contributions in modern nuclear and computer science through “Klara And The Bomb”, reflection on the contradictory symbiotic relationship between humans and domestic animals in “Horse and Novogen”, personal experiences under a population policy in “The Land Of Promises” or witty satire on a failed experiment that troubled the scientific community from “The Speed Of Light”. The authors demonstrated multi-dimensional, multi-linear perspectives when standing at the intersection of past, future, and present. The usage of alternative visual materials such as archival images, topographic maps, scientific documents, or images from family albums demonstrated efforts in diversifying storytelling strategies within the domains of photography and printed matter. The Eriskay Connection values close collaborations with authors while striving to work with local producers and sustainable materials, as well as establishing connections with bookstores and cultural hubs all over the world.

The travelling showcase will make its first stop at Là Giấy Coffee, Da Nang, from 28 Oct – 18 Nov 2023 before continuing its journey to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The showcase is organised with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vietnam.

During the development process for the Hai Phong artists exhibition, we tried to perceive the geographic region through their artworks as the impact of living environment and regional culture is somewhat engraved into the art of each individual. We’d acknowledged this through their realistic sceneries in previous exhibitions; peaceful, romanticized, idealized, beautiful yet gloomy. However, as some artists put efforts to dive deeper into personal expression, their art becomes rich, and reflective, and reinvigorates the spirit of the scenery. 

Exhibition “A State Called Meow”

Annam Gallery and Lân Tinh Foundation are thrilled to announce the first solo exhibition of Chu Tiến Thăng titled “A state called meow”.

Since ancient times, cats have always been a symbol in many different cultures around the world. They are mascots representing knowledge, wealth and luck. In the Asian 12 zodiac animals in countries such as China, Korea or Japan, the year “卯” represents the rabbit. The Vietnamese spoonerizes the Chinese word and have been calling it the year of the Cat.

Cats in everyday life scenes bring people endless inspiration and joy. Chu Tiến Thăng’s interest in cats also comes from the simplest beauties, such as when they are playing, dozing off, licking,… making us admire their flexible bodies. The actions of each body part are extremely independent, which stimulates the artist’s curiosity and will be the material for him to continue drawing in the future.Follow updates on event’s page.

“The Hidden Charms”

Gallery Medium and New World Saigon Hotel will introduce the exhibition “The Hidden Charms” at The Circle. The collection offers a glimpse into the corners of Saigon through exquisite aesthetic of Nguyễn Ngọc Liêm.

Nguyễn Ngọc Liêm (b.1989), an independent artist from Biên Hoà, is known for his ability to capture the beauty of minute details and the serenity in ordinary moments. In this edition of “The Hidden Charms” exhibition, Liêm showcases Saigon’s streets, including scenes, corners, trees, etc, in a minimalist pastel palette. 

Exhibition “Whoop Whoop”

Vin Gallery is humbled to present “Whoop Whoop” a solo show by Katharina Arndt. Living and working between Berlin and Barcelona, Katharina Arndt displays her unique and honest details in her paintings.

“Whoop Whoop” depicts how she captures the everyday life of a consumerist society through her colorful paintings.

The paintings are also symbols, they appear as tools to articulate the immaterial objects that haunt human life, especially in the online world.

A dreamer. Then, she encounters Earth. A meeting of a thousand years. Lâm Na, reborn through connecting with the Earth.

Exhibition “White Blank”

Galerie Quynh is pleased to present ‘White Blank’ – a highly anticipated exhibition of new works by Paris-based artist Tran Nu YênKhê. Known internationally in film for acting, art direction and costume design, YênKhê has been making art quietly for over three decades, though rarely exhibits her work publicly. In her first solo exhibition at the gallery, new and recent works created in Paris and Ho Chi Minh City are being presented for the first time. 

In the series of sculptures titled ‘White Blank’, YênKhê creates fluid forms that provide a source of meditation and relief from the turmoil of the world in which we live. Made in a range of materials from plaster, cast bronze and composite, the soft, organic structures are unrecognizable as specific entities yet at the same time, feel familiar. Inspired by a quote from Kandinsky, “White sounds as a silence, a nothing before any beginning,” YênKhê’s sculptures are entirely white – the works only become tangible through the presence of light. They are defined entirely through subtle shadows and highlights; any change in light engenders a transformation of their anatomy.

An exhibition by Trần Trung Tín entitled ‘Birdsong’ on the occasion of the late artist’s 90th birthday anniversary

Trần Trung Tín (1933 – 2008), a talented man with an exceptional life born into a bizarre epoch, had started painting merely as a way to go through the aftermath of an ideological crisis. Stuck in the extreme disillusionment and suppression, forbidden to speak up his thoughts or write out his opinions, Trần Trung Tín began to draw. In such a strange twist of fate, the used-to-be actor/announcer/film screenwriter then spent the entire last half of his life painting ceaselessly and quietly, and unexpectedly became the most absurd and brilliant phenomenon of Vietnamese art.
