Artist Yasumasa Suzuki

– Yasumasa Suzuki was born in Otsu, Shiga in 1941
– In 1969, Yasumasa Suzuki was selected for the first time to participate in the New Product Exhibition, and was continuously selected for the next 20 times. In 1969, he became a member of the Sogakai Association.
– In 2017-2018, an exhibition of original illustrations for 10 Nankichi picture books was held at the Niimi Nankichi Memorial Museum.

An epic tale of love, deception and human nature, Giselle is one of the world’s most beloved ballets. For more than two centuries, the beautiful, emotionally profound production has been bringing audiences to tears and visitors to the Saigon Opera House on October 20 and 21 will be marveled by the Vietnamese cast of dancers bringing it to life.

Choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot with music composed by Adolphe Adam, when Giselle was first staged in Paris in 1841, it was an instant sensation that quickly spread to stages around the globe. With a greater focus on telling a compelling narrative that portrays deep and human emotions, it signified a transition away from the grand courtly ballets of the Romantic era that were concerned more with technical prowess than moving stories. It influenced many major ballets that were later written while remaining a cornerstone of the genre around the world.

Giselle is set in a small village and begins when a young woman, Giselle, falls in love with a nobleman, Albrecht, when he is disguised as a commoner. When she learns of his true identity, she is heartbroken and the sorrow kills her. In the second act, the ballet takes a supernatural turn as Giselle returns as a vengeful type of spirit known as a Wilis, the ghost of an unmarried woman who dies after being betrayed by her lover and takes revenge by dancing men to death. The ballet reaches its climax as Giselle finds Albrecht and must decide if she should enact her revenge or show forgiveness.

Critics and artists alike credit Giselle with introducing new choreographic techniques and storytelling elements to ballet. Particularly, it was unique in emphasizing how ballet could convey emotion rather than just feats of physical strength and exactiness. The titular role is one of the most sought after in ballet as the performer must be not just a great physical performer but able to convey the work’s complex emotions including love, betrayal, anger and forgiveness.

At the Saigon Opera House, Đỗ Hoàng Khang Ninh, one of the youngest ballet artists in the HBSO Ballet Corps will play Giselle. She is not from family of dancers, but her unique skill and passion has won her praise and opportunities after enrolling in dance classes in Saigon. By impressing audiences, choreographers and judges she has earned opportunities to study ballet in Korea and Norway. Hồ Phi Điệp will play opposite her in the role of Albrecth. The Hạ Long native has worked for HBSO since 2006 and currently serves as a soloist and Deputy Head of the Ballet Department. The young talent dancer La Man Nhi will take the stage in the roll of Myrtha while Hilarion will be played by Meritous artist Đàm Đức Nhuận.

Giselle is a unique ballet that will thrill seasoned ballet enthusiasts as well as newcomers to the genre. Those familiar with the intricacies of ballet will be impressed to see the classic work performed by Vietnamese dancers who add their own unique style and enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Giselle’s clear storytelling, emotional depth and approachable pacing will convince viewers that everyone can appreciate ballet.

Illo Elysium is an exquisite glimpse inside an exceptionally lively mind. A perfect imagined reality, unique in character and definition. With unwavering humour and unavoidable “cuteness” all carefully invented, dreamed and executed with a distinct dose of reality and extraordinary precision.

Illo Elysium is a body of work created in Hanoi from 2020 – 2023. This self directed collection of illustration is not part of a commercial commission. The motivation for this work is best described by Anastasiia herself; “All these characters, the imaginary and real places, and objects are just falling/leaking/swimming out of my head onto paper.” Illo Elysium marks the first solo showcase in Hanoi of these escaped creations.

Anastasiia’s work is not just an imaginative introspection, it originates in the observation of life and her day-to-day experiences; motivated by sounds, feelings, scenes and narratives. Although drawn figuratively – but never literal in reality, her art is packed with astute references to humanity, literature, film and pop-culture; they are action packed vignettes of sharp wit. Though masked by the overall initial cuteness which she says is inescapable “I physically can’t draw not cute things” , it is vital to look deeper to see the immaculate detail.

Born in 1991 in Ukraine, Anastasiia graduated from the National University, Kiev, Ukraine in 2010 with a degree in Interior Design and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Animation from the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn in 2014. She has lived in Hanoi since 2019 and her artistic practice is based here. She works full-time as a freelance artist and also occasionally teaches illustration. Anastasiia previously worked as a character designer in a game design company before she went freelance.

Anastasiia is an illustrator who embraces traditional techniques, she loves working in miniature and her work is highly detailed. Anastasiia creates complex whimsical worlds with wit and humour, merging seemingly realistic situations with impossible protagonists.

She now works primarily as a children’s book illustrator. Currently she has 8 published books in the USA, Germany and Estonia. This is Anastasiia’s first solo exhibition in Hanoi.

Continuing the story of the past intertwined with the present, Gate Gate Gallery presents “Fragility Eternity | Mong manh vĩnh cửu” – a solo exhibition by multimedia artist Trần Minh Đức. The exhibition will present 15 multi-media installations.

Stepping into the space of Fragility Eternity, you are immersed in a world that is both mischievous and playful, yet full of reflection. Persistent in his artistic practice inspired by reflections on memories and historical branches from political cultural events closely related to stories from his family, from relatives, and from the neighborhood, Trần Minh Đức continues his journey of penetrating into the always-latent conflicts between different historical records through the image of the stars. Throughout the pink color from the installation “Những bông hoa hồng nở bung độ xuân về” to “Những vì sao mọc” or the dazzling pink LED light of “Xây dựng vì sao”, you are filled with the transience and emptiness of all these stories and histories. Mong Manh Vĩnh Cửu seems to gently touch the emotions, memories, and perceptions of each viewer in the space – like a passing breeze, or the lingering scent of a flower from a moment that was very far away.

Exhibition recalls liberation of Hanoi

An exhibition, named “The Roar of the Red River” which has two parts.

The first part features Hanoi’s preparations for a long resistance war following President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for national resistance against the French.

The second part highlights the significance of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954, which forced the French to sign the Geneva Accords and withdraw their troops from northern Vietnam.

The exhibition features a total of 23 pieces with various themes and styles ranging from abstract and minimalist to visual art. The colors, emotions, and themes depicted in the works transport us to different moments in time, cultural stories, and the artists’ personal experiences. The exhibition’s goal is to create a connection between the artist and their work, the work and the audience, and people and emotions. The title of the exhibition, “Communication With…” is open-ended, allowing each visitor to form their unique interpretation.

From October 04, 2023, to March 30, 2024, at Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), the large-scale installation exhibition “A Tide of Emotions” will be presented to public view for the first time in Vietnam, featuring artworks by Japanese female artist Chiharu Shiota, a worldwide famous name in conceptual art.

Chiharu Shiota is revered as one of Asia’s foremost female visionaries in the global realm of contemporary art. Through decades of her artistic odyssey, Shiota has ventured across a spectrum of creative realms, from the ephemeral dance of performance art to the silent reverie of painting, the tangible whispers of sculpture to the immersive embrace of installation. Shiota’s works are a convergence of beauty in both form and content, both making a strong visual impression and containing countless layers of deep meaning within.

The exhibition “A Tide of Emotions” includes completely new works made at VCCA. Notably, the main work with the same title covers VCCA’s huge space with a network of red threads, which are the representative material of the artist, linked to the wooden boats which carry history and stories and harbour multitudes of metaphors for a land like Vietnam, where a coastline stretches long as the eye can trace.

Chiharu Shiota (born 1972) is a Japanese contemporary artist, currently based in Berlin, Germany. Shiota is among the most active and successful contemporary artists in the world today whose works have been displayed in many prestigious museums and exhibitions in the region. She was chosen as the artist representing Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), one of the oldest and most reputable international art events in the world held every two years in Venice, Italy.

The exhibition Plan of the Summer delves into the memories and sounds of summer in each of us, in order to create a silence in our minds, for us to remember, or for us to be silent and cherish the Summer passing by.

Six artists, six individuals carrying their own summers.

Tran Hai Minh dances with the strokes and traces of inner strength and emotions. Sometimes slow and gentle like a light summer breeze, other times rushing and intense like a July downpour.

Do Minh Tam with the interweaving patches of memories and the present. Profound, philosophical, yet also spontaneous and vibrant.

Dam Dang Lai is spontaneous and surreal with colorful shapes, standing, lying, running, jumping, blending into space.

Floating like a cloud, twisting like the wind, lively like mischievous creatures, Tran An, calm yet full of dynamics with thought-provoking “material” blocks. Stretching, molding the surrounding space.

Can Van An, struggling with the collision, invasion between old and new, new and old. With seemingly radiant and shining patches of color, but harboring a sense of unease.

Dinh Duy Ton, emotions and inner thoughts with the changes of youth, cold but also incredibly warm with shapes made of iron and stainless steel that convey feelings.

Minh-Hoang Nguyen (b. 1992) takes an approach to photographic storytelling that is both conceptual and documentary. He creates fantasies using self-portraits to connect with the world and its objects, people, ideas, and history. When not making self-portraits, Hoang photographs the absurd drama of everyday life, often on the theme of solitude and intimacy.

Ly Hoàng Ly and Sàn Art heartily invite you to an open studio whose title draws inspiration from a poem of Gibran in “Sand and Foam” to explore the artist’s partially unfinished, partially fulfilled space of imagination.

Originating from the performance “Hugging trees – Hugging your loved ones – Hugging yourself” at the Plum Village, France in 2015, Ly Hoàng Ly carries on exploring the relations among different bodies as artistic material and the dynamic between internal drives and external forces.

As an artist adept in various materials, transformations of the external world, and micro changes in the inner soul, in this open studio, Ly presents her artwork-in-progress as a lingering meditation practice since 2018.

Coming here, the audience is asked to observe, and then interrogate the static and dynamic in performance art, the individuality and collectivity in public art, and the formation, participation, and contribution of factors that seem random and trivial, yet carefully calculated: time, location, body, audience – to position the artist’s presence in her work.

Coming here, the audience is invited for a conceptual dialogue to explore the possibilities of different utilisations of the interior and exterior space of the artworks; the materials and their effects on our sensation.

Thus, the artist and the audience together reflect and challenge, abolish and consolidate, forgetting and searching … to figure out these connections between humans with natural beings, between our inner self with the beauty, ugliness, and in betweenness of the surrounding world.

Assemblage: Me, my story and I

“Assemblage: Me, my story and I” is an attempt to explore the many paths the artists take in their works to reflect lifelong desires to find a unified self. The diversity of the artists’ artworks, practices and memories that draw from every day in their unique communities is not about fitting in, it is about trying to acknowledge the multiple worlds one inhabits.

In the group exhibition “Assemblage: Me, my story and I”, ten artists are reclaiming their past and presenting realities of existence as well as creating alternative discourses by finding clues from memories that can be personal, communal, regional or universal. It is the search for stories and narrations, often on the margins, that is a powerful, multi-layered recognition that the self may always remain both hidden and revealed to a retrospective look at the routes one takes in pursuit of one’s own authenticity.

Stratum Zero displays a wide range of works by Vietnamese artists in The Outpost Collection. The exhibition attends to the analysis of the aesthetic context and construction of the contemporary Vietnamese spirit and artistic landscape evoked from the works.

That analysis and construction is expressed through the practice of processing and restructuring the material language, through marking the enduring flow of Asian folklore and philosophy, as well as hidden, peripheral historical perspectives.

Nguyen Art Foundation (NAF) proudly presents ‘White Noise’ (curated by Van Do) and ‘Rhyming Gestures’ (curated by Thái Hà and Nhat Q. Vo) – two concurrent exhibitions with the participation of 19 artists from within and outside of our Collection.

The exhibitions will take place simultaneously across the campuses of EMASI Nam Long (District 7) and EMASI Van Phuc (Thu Duc City) from August 2023 to January 2024.

As a series of re-configurations of existing artworks from within and outside of NAF’s Collection, ‘White Noise’ proposes an interpretation of the Foundation’s 2023 theme Community and Compassion through a post-pandemic and post-human lens with participating artists Dao Tung, Tran Tuan, Nguyen Phuong Linh, Lai Dieu Ha, Nguyen Huy An, Dinh Q. Le, Nguyen Tran Nam, Jeamin Cha, Cam Xanh and Nguyen Trung.
