VietNamNet Bridge – It is difficult to make statistics of awards in Vietnam’s entertainment market so far, because many of them have disappeared. Below are several “reputed” awards which attract the public’s attention.

Music Awards

1. Lan Song Xanh (Blue Wave) Award

Lan Song Xanh is considered the first recording award of Vietnam. It was launched in 1998 by the HCM City People’s Voice Radio. At the age of 13, this award has lost its prestige after many scandals of award “trading”. This award is also boring because for years, the award winners have not changed. If the organizing board doesn’t perform reforms, this award will disappear very soon.

2. Bai Hat Viet (Vietnamese Song) Award

Starting from 2005, Bai Hat Viet, organized by the Vietnam Television (VTV) and Cat Tien Sa company, is praised as a playground that greatly contributes to the development of Vietnam’s music. Many award-winning songs have become very popular in Vietnam.

However, after 2-3 years, this competition became a “show” of contemporary folk music genre and its attractiveness decreased. In the last two years, with the presence of new names like Le Cat Trong Ly and Mai Khoi; Bai Hat Viet has gradually resumed its success.

3. Cong Hien (Dedication) Award

Since 2004, Cong Hien Award has been the most reputed music award in Vietnam, since the winners are voted by journalists who cover the culture and art news in Vietnam.

This award is launched by Sports and Culture Newspaper, in cooperation with Le Bros company. Its weakness is the shortage of clear criteria to choose the winners and the unclear meaning of “Dedication”. The award was presented to both singers of market music (Ho Ngoc Ha and Dam Vinh Hung) and singers of orthodox music (Duc Tuan, My Linh, Tung Duong).

4. Golden Album

This is the only award for the best music products in a month in Vietnam. As Vietnamese singers release their albums very often, this award doesn’t lack candidates. However, it doesn’t help find out music talents for Vietnam.

Other music awards like Platinum Star and New-generation Diva died early. The award presented by the Vietnam Music Association is not popular.

Movie Awards

1. Golden Lotus

This is the oldest film award in Vietnam, held by the Vietnam Cinematography Agency since 1970. This film festival was organized 17 times. Sometimes it was organized once every three years and sometimes once each two years. Most of the winning films are called “phim cung cu” (films produced by state-owned film studios to celebrate anniversaries or events, which don’t catch up with the real life).

These films and their actors are not very popular to the audience. Winning films are often screened at cinemas for a week and then go to warehouses.

2. Golden Kite Award

This is the annual movie award of the Vietnam Movie Association. The first festival was held in March 2002.

This event is organized unprofessionally, with controversies booming before and after the festival.

3. Vietnam International Film Festival (VNIFF Award)

This is the first international film festival of Vietnam, organized in 2010 for the first time. However, the future of this award is unclear now.

4. Yxineff

This is the award for short films, organized by a website. This award is launched to share and encourage film-making passion among young talents through their first short films.

General awards

1. Mai Vang (Golden Apricot) Award

This award has been organized 16 times and it is worthy to be recognized as the leading entertainment award of Vietnam.

As a reputed award which was launched in the infancy of Vietnam’s showbiz, Mai Vang used to attract both artists and audiences.

But, it is similar to other awards. Mai Vang is losing its prestige owing to scandals related to award trading and unfair selection.

2. HTV Award

It was organized by the HCM City Television (HTV) for five times and it is now a reputed award with clear criteria and well organized manner. HTV Award is the only award that makes public the number of text messages sent by the audiences to vote for their favorite singers and artists.
