The stakes are thought to be related to the historic battle of Bach Dang in 1288

The stakes which have a diameter of 20-50 centimetres each are planted some 5-7 metres apart from one another. They were embedded vertically or at a 15-20 fixed angle towards the west and the south.
The stakes are at Cao Quy, Lien Khe Commune, Thuy Nguyen District.
Earlier in October this year, local residents also discover nine other wooden stakes with a larger diameter in the same field. They were arranged at a 20-45 fixed angle towards the west and the south.
Analysis showed that these stakes dated back to the year of 1270 to 1430. The area where the stakes were found was previously river bed.
According to archaeologists, the stakes could have played a role in the historic battle of Bach Dang in 1288.
The Battle of Bach Dang was one of the greatest victories in Vietnamese military history against the invading army of the Chinese Mongol Yuan Dynasty, commanded by general Omar Khan. The battle took place at the Bach Dang River. Vietnamese General Tran Hung Dao studied the tidal lore and ordered beds of stakes to be planted under the water and arranged ambushes as part of a wide campaign.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has allowed the Haiphong Museum to work with the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology to explore Cao Quy until June 30 next year. Dtinews
