The European Commission, working together with the national authorities responsible for nuclear energy, will run stress tests on all European nuclear reactors, European Union Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a news conference following a meeting of EU energy ministers in Godollo, some 30 kilometers from Budapest, Oettinger noted that while nearly one-third of the electric power Europe uses comes from nuclear facilities, only 14 of the 27 EU members have nuclear power plants.
Safety, however, is a concern for the entire continent, so the EU will undertake a thorough testing program enabling it to guarantee their safety, he said.
The national authorities responsible for nuclear power will meet next week, and are expected to set the six-part test criteria at that time, Oettinger said. The tests will begin in June, he added, and a full report on outcomes should be ready for the European Council meeting of heads of state and government in December.
Hungary's national development minister Tamas Fellegi, who is responsible for energy issues, said tests on the country's lone nuclear power plant would begin as soon as the EU set the testing criteria.
