Exhibition “Tò He”
Opening: Fri 21 Oct, 6 pm
Exhibition: 21 – 28 Oct 2011
Viet Art Centre, 42 Yet Kieu, Hanoi
You are invited to the 8th solo exhibition of artist Le Kinh Tai titled “Tò He”. The exhibition displays 23 paintings and 9 sculptures of artist. You can read a part of a review about this exhibition by art critic, curator Nhu Huy and see some beautiful artworks in this exhibition below:
The title of the exhibition “Tò He”, which is also the 8th solo exhibition of artist Lê Kinh Tài, inspires my reflections on the ontological aspect of the artist himself. Tò he (toy figurine) is a traditional toy for children in Vietnam that is made from glutinous rice powder in form of edible figurine such as animals, flowers or characters in folk stories. Tò he was made and sold mostly on festivals, especially the Tết and the Trung Thu, which are Vietnamese children’s favorites.
By the act of naming his show “Tò He”, it seems that Lê Kinh Tài would more or less aspire to make a metaphor of his work as an artist. In this metaphorical peruse, his own artwork and career are referred to the practice and product of a traditional artisan, who has not only never been isolated to life, but also by his talent and creativity, gives joy, imagination and passion to the world.
Definitely, seeing the series of artworks in this exhibition, which includes 23 paintings (the biggest is 200 cm x500 cm) and 9 sculptures (Lê Kinh Tài himself insists to call his 9 sculptures as 9 “Tò He”), one cannot help admiring, firstly to his working efforts, and secondly to the joy that these artworks are able to give.
Right at this moment that the fundamental metaphor of art as a magic wand which could immediately turn its audience into the children by just one single touch seems to be perfectly manifested. In the world which is day by day becoming older and uglier, the ability of becoming a child seems to be a necessary need, even a vital demand for us to survive.
Becoming a child, in a sense, is to return to our ability of being surprised, which we seem to forget as we get matured. Becoming a child is also to come back to the magic of life, to our ability of being moved deeply by the little things that our grown-up minds may consider to be too frivolous to be noticed.
In these new paintings and sculptures of Lê Kinh Tài, the colors: Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Black, and White etc. seem to be no longer themselves anymore, just like the rice powder in the hand of the talented Tò he artisans, is no longer itself but lively animals and characters. Lê Kinh Tài’s colors, by a magic way, now become vivid, resounded, sometime warmly, and sometime humorously. Even the texts written down directly by artist on the surface of some paintings, also by a magic way, no longer make any literature meaning but transform into the visual elements, without which the whole compositions can not be fully complete as they are and by which, release such a deep joy for us.
Viet Art Centre is located directly adjacent to the Vietnam University of Fine Arts.

UK underground rap talent AJ live
Fri 21 Oct 2011, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi
HRC Proudly Presents raw UK underground rap talent AJ live in Hanoi, Friday 21st October. Supported by DJ Polo and Dirty Fingrz.
Hip-hop artist, freestyler and lyricologist AJ will bring his crowd-crunching rhymes and flows to grip the capital of Vietnam for one sizzling hot night of hip-hop. AJ’s success in the UK has been built on his clever wordplay, rhyming patters and quirky metaphors, delivering a current sound with an old school vibe.
With more than 10 years of experience under his belt, AJ has an impressive backlog of live shows, having performed at top festivals, The Secret Garden Party, Whychwood festival on ‘BBC Introducing’ stage, Invincible… and having shared the stage with some of the biggest names in today’s UK hip-hop, electronic and soul music scene, including:
Chase and Status, Ed Sheeran, Example, Annie Mac, and as the main support on Beatbullyz UK tour.
AJ has released two studio albums; most recently 2010′s ‘Lyricologist’, produced by ‘MrO’. His early love for music was inspired by acts such as the late Michael Jackson, Wu-Tang Clan, Sizzla and Big L. His diverse listening patterns have given him the taste for his own musical flow drawing on these inspirations to create rhymes reminiscent of these 90s hip hop acts.
At this moment in time, when UK hip-hop, dance, rap, grime and urban music is arguably in the best shape it has been for years, HRC is delighted to open the gates to this top, touring act.
Hanoi’s own DJ Polo will also be rocking the crowd, along with a special treat late night reggae set from the man AJ himself after the rhymes, and UK trip hop sounds provided by Dirty Fingrz.
Ticket price: 100 000 VND at door.
Painting Exhibition “Timelessness”
Opening: Mon 24 Oct, 6 pm
Exhibition: 24 – 30 Oct 2011
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc St., Hanoi
You are invited to the painting exhibition “Timelessness”. ”Timelessness” is the first painting exhibition of the 3+ group including three authors from Hai Phong City: Bui Duy Khanh, Mai Duy Minh, Vu Ngoc Vinh. Every member has his own reason for living with art.
Three members of the 3+ group have the common point of paying attentions to the real life with variety of themes, from human universal philosophy to the times stories and simple and beautiful landscapes in the daily life although everyone has his own reason for art. They hope that they will not only follow this way but also carry many other colleagues along, making a new realistic painting trend in Vietnam: It will escape from rationalistic realistic descriptions to become the realistic painting of “one’s heart and mind” (Thai Ba Van, art critic).
Bui Duy Khanh (born in 1972) has loved painting since his childhood and learned to paint from a school teacher. Life with a lot of ups and downs seemed to take him far away from painting. However, painting as his childhood hobby is more like a part of his identity which cannot be cleansed in his mind and heart. The life is not always with ups and downs that like his love for painting cannot disappear. Now, his peaceful life gives him more time free, taking back his hobby of painting. In 2010, he learned to paint watercolor from a foreigner friend. His instinctive talent and true passion for painting helps to make his pieces of art full of his personal feelings. His paintings partly express his life peacefulness which is his reality as well as his lifetime dream. Although there are some mistakes of painting technique in his pieces but audience cannot easily deny the attractive descriptions of waves there. Most of his paintings are sea – pieces.
Vu Ngoc Vinh (born in 1978) is the only member working in Hanoi now. He has studied at the department of Fine – Arts Pedagogics – the Vietnam Fine – Arts University. He has had long time to earn his living by painting although he always thought himself that was not the best way to live and work with art. He understands that art means creativity finally. Therefore, his paintings in this exhibition are results of his creation which is completely with his heart and soul for the first time in his life. They express his concerns in today’s real life with pulling – about and loss and hopes.
Mai Duy Minh (born in 1976) is the most experienced member in the group. He had two solo exhibitions in Hanoi and the second one, Dust of Life, organized by the Goethe Institute, was said remarkable in his art life. In that exhibition, Mr Xavier Augustin, the director of the Institute, said: “Does not follow contemporary art alternatives, Mai Duy Minh is the unique which is worthily notable in the younger generation of artists in Hanoi.” Continuing the style of harmonizing the realistic and surrealistic school in the last solo exhibition, Mai Duy Minh introduces the biggest painting in his art life till now, titled Promising Land, at size 540cm (width) x 200cm (height). This is certainly the biggest painting exhibited nationwide in Vietnam this year. The painting takes audience back to the basic matter of human life which has not been completely resolved although they themselves have been building the global civilized human life: the matter of bread and butter. It is actually the poor’s daily problem. However, it is sometimes a possession in the rich’s unconsciousness which influences their spiritual life and might take away their free and happy lives some time.

Screening of “24 City”
Sat 22 Oct 2011, 6.30 pm
DOCLAB, Goethe Institute, 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi
You are invited to the screening of “24 city” (112 min) by Chinese filmmaker, Jia Zhang-ke.
“When the state-owned Factory 420 becomes a luxury apartment complex known as “24 City,” the stories of three generations and eight characters meld together to offer an intimate glimpse into the history of China. The line between documentary and fiction blurs as the towering factories on which socialism was built are dismantled and employees are laid off, paving the way for a free-market economy. Located in Sichuan’s capital city of Chengdu, the 420 plant used to produce airplane engines. For more than 50 years, it was the center of life for hundreds of workers. Now, as builders prepare to transform the factory into luxury condos, interviews with real workers and ex-workers are intercut with vignettes about a lonely Shanghai woman (Joan Chen) exiled in Chengdu, a mother (Lu Liping) who lost her son on the long trip from Shenyang, and a young professional (Zhao Tao) pondering the uncertain fate faced by her elderly working-class parents.” ~ Jason Buchanan, Rov.
Free entrance.

Art Exhibition “Nowhere”
Opening: Fri 28 Oct, 6 pm
Exhibition: 29 Oct – 20 Nov 2011, 9.30 am – 6 pm
Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, 27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam
Artist’s Talk: Fri 04 Nov 2011, 7 – 8.30 pm
Nhasan Studio
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents an art exhibition “NOWHERE” by three emerging artists: Motoyuki Shitamichi, Mamoru Okuno and Tuan Mami.
This exhibition is a part of the project entitled “Emerging Artist Series,” in which we aim to introduce young promising artists to broader audience in Vietnam, as well as to provide an opportunity for the artists to explore further development of their creativities.
The said three artists met each other at Tokyo Wonder Site through the artist-in-residence program in Tokyo (JENESYS Creator Invitation Program for Tuan Mami). As their dialogues and discussions grew, they became interested in each other’s view and concept, and gradually felt the commonality in their artworks.
This exhibition is their first attempt, after finding congenial spirits in each other in Tokyo, to create new artworks through their observations and researches in Hanoi. Shitamichi and Mamoru stayed for a month in Hanoi for this project.
The conceptual message from the artists for this exhibition says,
“We pass by without knowing it, and yet, there it is.”
Shitamichi will visualize unseen memories and values in ordinary landscapes through simple materials and images, while Mamoru will help you to enhance your imagination through ordinary sounds and voices. Mami will also inspire you to think about the social relationships of human beings through his performance and photographs.
We do hope that the viewers will enjoy their artistic viewpoints of the world, which is demonstrated by the exhibition’s title, No-where, Now-here.
Free entrance, no closing days.
