Performance of MEN with Go Lim
Sun 11 Mar 2012, 7 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi
Gender-bending, genre-smashing sensation MEN are preparing to hit Vietnam for the first time this March 11.
Riding the razor’s edge at the intersection of art, politics and culture, MEN have been winning fans worldwide since 2007 with their signature mix of dance, punk and pop. Fronted by feminist electropunk pioneer J.D. Samson (Le Tigre), MEN draw on the legacy of new wave icons like Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, 80s post-punk, synth-pop and 90s electro to create a politcially charged and uniquely millennial sound.
Pairing viciously catchy disco-punk with lyrics that leap from political economy, to queer culture to sexual politics Samson and bandmates Michael O’Neill and Lee Free are a band on a mission to provoke thought and challenge attitudes as much as they are to shake hips.
“Women still make 75% to the man’s dollar and queers are still being murdered, beat up, fired, unfairly treated, and aren’t allowed to marry,” Samson says.
“I’m the first to be optimistic about … everything that has changed in the past decade. But I’m realistic about the work that needs to be done, and I won’t stop speaking for what I believe needs to change.”
Coming straight from their Australia/New Zealand tour – including a headline performance at the Sydney Mardi Gras – MEN will hit Hanoi on Sunday March 11, joining local fem rockers Go Lim for a one-off show for CAMA at Hanoi Rock City.
Radical, raw, challenging, but above all danceable, MEN are one act not to miss in 2012!

Thu 08 Mar 2012, 3 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi, 56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Video Art Video presents the screening of The Passing, a video art by famous video artist, Bill Viola. “The Passing is personal response to the spiritual extremes of birth and death in the family. Black-and-white imagery and underwater scenes depicts a twilight world hovering on the borders of human perception and consciousness, where the multiple lives of the mind-memory, reality, and vision-merge.” – Bill Viola, 1991.
Considered by many to be one of Viola’s most important and accessible works, The Passing speaks eloquently to human experience at its most profound, it is a meditation on the passage of generations. This one-hour video is a landmark of twentieth-century visual narrative as well as an expression of spirituality that is both deeply personal and universally understood.
Bill Viola (born in 1951) is a contemporary video artist. He is considered a leading figure in the generation of artists whose artistic expression depends upon electronic, sound, and image technology in New Media. Exhibition “Landscapes of Vietnam”
COpening: Tue 06 Mar, 2 pm
Exhibition: 05-10 Mar 2012, 8 am – 5 pm
Exhibition House, 29 Hang Bai Str, Hanoi
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Hanoi has the pleasure to present the exhibition of the eminent Polish landscape painter Franciszek Ryszard MAZUREK. Born in 1951 F. R. Mazurek graduated from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Faculty of Fine arts. Since 1979 he has presented more than 30 individual exhibitions (in Poland, Ukraine, Germany, France, United Arab Emirates, Moldavia, Romania and Belgium and Vietnam, etc.) and participated in more than 11 group exhibitions (in Poland, Italy, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Romania and Hungary).
In October 2011, with the sponsorship of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, the artist came to Vietnam to present his art works of the beauty of the landscapes of the Lublin region_ his hometown_ in Eastern Poland. This time, he came back with the Exhibition entitled ‘Landscapes of Vietnam’ featuring 33 paintings of the beauty of Vietnamese landscapes where he was travelling in October last year. With the same creative inspiration of finding what is usual and ordinary and transferring his observations onto his canvas, Mr. Mazurek’s paintings once again teach us to be humble to the passing of time; they preserve the shape of changing landscape characteristic of a particular place. One can find the beauty of this land in his paintings as well as the world full of memories and emotions. Regardless of what the opinion of modern painting is, this type of creative activity is another confirmation of the role which realistic art plays in contemporary world.

Jazz Concert with Franck Amsallem
Screening of “We Don’t Care about Music Anyway”
Hanoi: 6, 7 and 8 Mar 2012, 7 pm
ATK, 73A Mai Hac De, Hanoi
HCMC: Fri 09 Mar 2012, 8 pm
Café Saturday, 25B Tran Cao Van, District 3, HCMC
You are invited to four official screenings of “We Don’t Care about Music Anyway” – accompanied by live experimental sounds from a host of talented local musicians. “We Don’t Care About Music Anyway” is a documentary film associating and confronting the work of 8 musicians from Tokyo’s new music scene with the Japanese society.
“Rather than a film about music, we like to think of “We Don’t Care..” as a film about sound and its perception” say directors CédricDupire and Gaspard Kuentz. How else to approach Tokyo’s world renowned avant-garde music scene? The amplified sound of a controlled heartbeat; the screech of an electric cello played with ferocity; turntablism at its most esoteric; walls of guitar drones over 8-bit soundscapes: these are the points where a diverse, ultra-modern cityscape meets ancient traditions in creative youths.
For people whose wish to explore new terrains far outweighs any narrow-minded prejudices: the film is a real treat, one that will sonically transfer you to a different world – or take you closer to a reality that has always been there – or maybe both, depends on how you look at it.
Program
In Hanoi: film screening with live performances from: Tri Minh + Pham Quang Tran Minh (on the 6th), Vu Nhat Tan (solo set) (7th), Vu Nhat Tan + Bush Lam (8th).

German Opera Night
09 and 10 Mar 2012, 8 pm
Hanoi Opera House
1 Trang Tien Str, Hanoi
In January 2010, the “German Year in Vietnam” was inaugurated with a brilliant performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony by the VNSO and the Berlin Philharmonic Choir under Alber’s direction. After another highly successful concert in 2011, when Alber and the VNSO jointly presented Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, we are now more than pleased to once again welcome Jonas Alber in Hanoi for our German Opera Night this year.
Under Alber’s direction, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra will present excerpts from Mozart‘s „Die Zauberflöte“, Beethoven‘s „Fidelio“ und Wagner‘s „Der Fliegende Holländer”, showcasing arias, duets and trios which have not yet been played in Vietnam.
Exceptional about these concerts is the fact that they were preceded by a period of intense preparation under the artistic direction of Mr. David Miller. David Miller, répétiteur and conductor at the Théàtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, has worked with world-class talents for many years. For the German Opera Night he conducted an intense workshop with eight of the VNOB’s soloists: Vu (Tenor), Thang Long (Soprano), To Loan (Soprano), Le Thi Vanh Khuyen (Mezzo-Soprano), Diep (Mezzo-Soprano), Trinh Thanh Binh (Tenor), Vu Manh Dung (Baritone), und Minh Dung (Baritone).
About Conductor Jonas Alber
Jonas Alber studied violin and conducting in Freiburg and Vienna. The Herbert von Karajan Foundation awarded him a scholarship in 1995. He was General Music Director at the State Theater Braunschweig by 1998, at the time Germany’s youngest conductor in this position and one which he held until 2007. Exhibition “Houses Facing the Street”
Opening: Thu 08 Mar, 6 pm
Exhibition: 08 – 28 Mar 2012, 9 am – 7 pm
Artist Talk: Thu 15 Mar, 6 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Goethe-Institut Hanoi presents Nguyen The Son’s solo exhibition “Houses Facing the Street”. The exhibition focuses on an aspect of Hanoi’s rapid change which has spread without having been noticed: huge billboards that cover entire house fronts and compete for the viewer’s attention with their bright colors.
All the human eye perceives, however, is the colorful advertisement, the gaze does not penetrate, one speeds past. Hanoi’s residential buildings, which have long shaped the face of the city, are changing: Instead of windows and balconies which facilitate the communication between neighbors, tall billboards seal the houses off, both towards the street, the outside, as well as the inside. What remains is a lightless living space behind the façade losing in value as well as a city with a changed face.
Nguyen The Son seizes upon the issue of these billboards and, by digital means, makes it into entire streets. Using a unique printing technique on Xuan paper and silk, the artist manages to intertwine both old and new techniques in an appealing union. Furthermore, the exhibition features photographic installations which play with the beholder’s perception and blur the line between reality and fiction. This extraordinary exhibition by Nguyen The Son, who has already focused his attention on other phenomenons of Hanoi’s urban landscape in earlier works, invites the visitor to see Hanoi with different eyes.
Nguyen The Son was born in 1978. He graduated from the Vietnam Academy of Fine Arts in 2002, where he then filled a teacher’s position from 2002 until 2008. In 2008, he began the pursuit of his Master’s degree in Fine Art Photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Apart from his solo exhibitions “Headwash”(2005), “High Above” (2007) and “New higher Level” (2009), Nguyen The Son’s work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Vietnam and China from 2000 until today.
