Future Shorts One August Screening
Sat 20 Aug 2011, 7 pm
Le Cooperative, 46 An Duong, Tay Ho Dis., Hanoi
Future Shorts ONE, the monthly film festival, continues its mission to bring audiences together and showcase the best films from around the world this August. A film festival unlike any other, Future Shorts ONE aims to bring short films to every corner of society, taking place everywhere in bars, warehouses, theatres, cinemas and elsewhere. With its launch in Hanoi in November 2010 comes an opportunity to host one of the leading and most innovative short film labels – every month! – whilst simultaneously promoting an array of local venues, art and music. August 2011 marks Future Shorts Hanoi’s comeback after a short summer vacation. Get ready, Hanoi!
The official FS ONE August programme features a diverse selection of films, including animations, music videos and dramas. In Radiostan we roam the terrain from Kyrgyzstan to Moscow, tuning in and out of people’s lives like the changing frequencies on a radio. Children discuss life’s eternal dilemma of having permanent teeth in Klaus Kjeldsen’s charming The Loose Tooth. A kaleidoscope of colours and heads make up the strange landscape of I Like U, the debut music video for French indie rockers The Chase. Other highlights from this month’s exciting programme include Stuck In a Groove, A Family Portrait, La Dame Au Chien, and winner of Best the British Short Film award at the 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival, Baby.

Screening of “Four Minutes”
Tue 23 Aug 2011, 7.30 pm
IDECAF, 28 Le Thanh Ton, Distr 1, HCMC
You are invited to the film screening of “Four minutes” from director Chris Kraus.
Music is a universal language, not only because everyone intuitively understands it. It also offers the possibility of an acoustic response where words fail or are inappropriate. The film brings together in the isolated world of a prison, two women who have two things in common: problems with themselves and the world, and an almost fantastic devotion to music.
Synopsis: Traude Krüger has for 60 years had the difficult job of piano teacher in a women’s prison. When the 80-year-old encounters the young inmate Jenny, she meets someone with an unpredictable propensity for violence against herself and others which discharges itself vehemently and without regard for loss. But the fact that in Jenny a great musical talent slumbers, which she has since childhood denied, wakes in both women an ambition which seemed long defeated. For both women, shadows of the past have created a hard shell which forces them together. So they take on the challenge. At times fighting together and at times fighting against one another, they struggle towards an important music competition in which Jenny will have four minutes to describe her personality in sound.
Language: German with Vietnamese subtitles.

Performance of Opera “Carmen”
29 and 30 Sep 2011, 8 pm
Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien, Hanoi
The opera “Carmen” with director Helena Rohr (Sweden) and conductor Graham Sutcliffe will be performed by more than 150 artists, musicians and Singers of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet. The modern “Carmen” performed in Vietnam will be very different from Bizet’s classic! The opera was also successfully performed last May.
This Carmen is set inside a Vietnamese cigarette factory. Carmen is from Hanoi and José is from Yen Bai. As Director Helena Röhr says, – with this Carmen we want to tell the story set in contemporary Hanoi, so the audience will follow and understand the story, and somehow connect it to their own lives.
This version of Carmen will focus on the theme of domestic violence in todays society – particularly towards women. The opera will portray Carmen as a victim rather than someone who is to blame for what happens – as is so often seen in more traditional versions . The violence between José and Carmen, which in the end leads to her death, is indicative of the cruel reality which many women in society face today, says Helena, who, in order to better understand this terrible social problem, has cooperated closely with the NGO CSAGA, which works with survivors of domestic violence in Vietnam.
Carmen is sung by Vanh Khuyen and Don José by Thanh Binh and Nguyen Vu. The toreador, who in this version is a famous Thai Boxer, is sung by Manh Dung. The opera will be performed in French and Vietnamese by the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet theatre with the participation of the Hanoi International Choir. There will be more than 100 people on stage, including singers, chorus and dancers. The Opera’s music director is Graham Sutcliffe who will also conduct the performances.
Helena Röhr and Annsofi Nyberg directed and produced Mozart’s Così fan tutte with VNOB in 2006 as part of the cultural exchange programme between Sweden and Vietnam. Even though that 5 year project has now ended, Hanoi has become a new hometown and creative base for the two Swedish artists.
Conductor Graham Sutcliffe, has lived and worked in Vietnam for nearly 20 years and has conducted many concerts, ballets and operas for orchestras in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi over the years. He is currently resident conductor with the VNOB.
