The closing week of “Graffiti in the Alley”
The closing week of “Graffiti in the Alley”: 02 – 07 Aug 2011
Zerostation, The quarter 288, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Str, D.3, HCMC
For the entire 26 days of the project (from 12 July to 07 August), since the first day when all artists from Click 9 were totally new ones entering in a very unfamiliar spraying environment, and when the residents at the quarter 288 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia curiosly observed something they almost have never seen before, up to now, there has been a dialogue, sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly, and sometimes both explicitly and implicitly, which has taken place between both sides, They and We, the old and the new, the familiarity and the unfamiliartity.
From the perspective of the organizer of the project, we have tried to make place for the existence of the others at the same time and in the same space by which, open the possibilities of the Gadamerian dialogue for both sides. We hope that it is in the process of the multi-dimensional dialogue that a new space of the translation of each other, which is named the understading by Gadamer, will be opened up automatically.
In the space of this translation, of this understanding, there will automatically be new activities such as interpretation, application, or even loan translation from which the dialogue will reach an ideal situation for all dialoguing partners, the situation of extending the horizons and then of fusioning horizions but at the same time no one gets lost in the imposing discourse, not only by the others, but also by herself in the process of trying to impose the others.
In this closing week, from 02 to 07 August 2011, there will be two events.
The first event is from 02 to 06 of August (from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm everyday). In these days, the artists from Click 9 will be still finishing their wall drawing outside, and at the same time, they will organize the displays of all visual and textual information reporting their whole work in the space inside of ZeroStation. The audience could come and have in person talk with the artists.
The second event is the closing party at 6:00 pm, 07 August 2011 (Sunday). This is an open party not only for the artists, the organizer, but also for all audience, especially for the residents living in the alley who have been the organic part of the project “Graffiti in the alley”.

HITS Show: Summer Shorts
Thu 11 Aug 2011, 7.30 pm
Fri 12 Aug 2011, 5 pm
Sat 13 Aug, 2 pm and 7.30 pm
L’Espace, 24 Trang Tien Str, Hanoi
So maybe you have already heard the rumours of yet another HITS show coming soon, well IT IS and VERY SOON!
This summer 2 HITS “old timers” Dan Levitt and Nadia Engelbrecht return to Hanoi yet again, following the success of Love Shorts last year, to lead proceedings along with a newer member (but no stranger to the theatre) Kelly Brennan. Together these three directors have selected a series of 5 one act plays and one monologue.
Much like last year, we’ll indulge the audience with a bit of romance, but be warned, we’ve added a bit of gloom and death to this year’s performance! There may be some blood, gore and even some broken hearts! This year, we’ve decided to double the number of performances so that more of Hanoi can join us on three evenings and a matinee of drama, comedy and even a little bit of action!
Notice: Contains adult themes – not advisable for children
Ticket price: 120 000 VND
Tickets will be on sale from this weekend at Puku, Hanoi Social Club and Joma (Westlake).

L’Espace, 24 Trang Tien, Hanoi
On the occasion of the publication of works by Oscar Brenifier and Jacques Després in Vietnamese, L’Espace organizes a book introduction and a meeting with translator Pham Quang. This book is something for us to think. It’s an exceptional book.
We acknowledge many contradictions at the very young age: tall vs short, cold vs hot, dark vs light. Gradually, our mind becomes more sophisticated. We have the ability to acknowledge more abstract ideas and complicated concepts. But our mind still requires some comparisons. Without contrasting ideas, we can not think.
The book introduces 20 contrasting pairs by listing how they are different, and linking them together by one question and finally drawing out the conclusion why one thing leads to another. The pictures in the book perfectly depicts how the ideas are formed. This book is for us to look at and to think about…

“Chihiro and Totto-chan” Exhibition
Opening: Tue 09 Aug, 10 am
Exhibition: 09 – 31 Aug 2011, 9.30 am – 6 pm
Exhibition Hall, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, 27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem Dist., Hanoi
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with the Chihiro Art Museum and Nha Nam Publishing House, shares the delight of hosting an art exhibition “CHIHIRO & TOTTO-CHAN”, by Iwasaki Chihiro. The organizers hope that everyone who sees this exhibition will enjoy the creative interplay between Iwasaki Chihiro and Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, who wish all the time for the happiness of children and peace.
Before the publication of “Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window” by Kuroyanagi Tetsuko (Actress, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Director of the Chihiro Art Museum) in 1981, the episodes were appeared serially in the monthly magazine “Wakai Josei” [lit. Young Women] (1979-1980).
However, Tetsuko said that even 20 years before the serial publication, writing about her childhood memoir was always in her mind, and finally made a decision to write about it when she found there were around 7,000 remaining paintings and illustrations of various postures of children drawn by Iwasaki Chihiro (1918 – 1974).
During the two years of the serial publication, Tetsuko, the author of Totto-chan (Totto-chan is a nickname of the author), repeatedly visited the Chihiro Art Museum and selected Chihiro’s artworks which were matched with each episode in her non-fiction story.
The story is about the author’s childhood memoir mainly on her life, during World War II, at Tomoe Gakuen, a Tokyo elementary school where unconventional education was conducted. The combination of learning with fun, freedom, and love at the school made Totto-chan a spontaneous girl and eventually led her to a successful life.
Over 7.6 million copies of Totto-chan have been sold in Japan, keeping the top- selling record of all time, and it has been translated into more than 35 different languages. While Totto-chan herself is charming enough to attract plethora of readers, the artworks on the book illustrated by Iwasaki Chihiro are also essential to the worldwide popularity of the book.
This year 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the Japanese publication “Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window”, as well as its launch of Vietnamese version by Nha Nam Publishing House directly translated from Japanese.
In commemoration of such a special year both for Vietnam and Japan, Chihiro’s 30 selected artworks mainly used for Totto-chan will be exhibited at the Exhibition hall, the Japan Fundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem).
The opening starts at 10 am on Tuesday 9 August, including a talk by the curator of Chihiro Art Museum and a reading. Special Vietnamese “Totto-chan” books with the author’s autograph might be presented to lucky visitors on the opening day, as well as the visitors during the exhibition. The exhibition is free admission. The Vietnamese version of Totto-chan is also on sale at the venue.
