Jazz and World Music Night “Hometown”
12 & 13 Jul 2011, 8 pm
Rooftop Bar, 19th Floor, Pacific Place, No. 83B Ly Thuong Kiet Str, Hoan Kiem Dist, Hanoi
You are invited to the Jazz and World music performance “Hometown”. This evening performance will be the musical combination of Nguyen Le the famous Vietnamese-French guitarist and a very well known six-piece local band including artists: Van Anh (T’rung), Khac Quan (violon), Hong Kien (saxophone), Quoc Binh (drums), Tuan Nam (piano) and Vu Ha (guitar Bass). Nguyen Le’s performance will be accompanied by the incredible vocalist Tung Duong who is not only deeply passionate about Jazz and blues but one of Vietnam’s representatives in the European Jazz Festival in Hanoi.
Nguyen Le was born in Paris. Although graduating from Visual Art and Philosophy, he decided to follow his passion and created the band “Ultramarine”. The band’s album “Dé” was voted as the best world music CD in 1989 by the French magazine “Libération”. In September 1987, he was invited to play in French National Jazz Orchestra conducted by Antoine Hervé where he met and worked with various top artists and musicians from all over the world. He is regarded by fans as an inspiring talent who has contributed in creating the contemporary French music. He has produced numerous Jazz and World music albums that are acknowledged over the world. Amongst these include CD Tales from Vietnam brought him the strongest recognition and a great number of global awards such as Diapason d’Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Choc de I’année Jazzman, runner up of Jazzthing 96, ect.
Although being born and growing up in a foreign country, Nguyen Le is also greatly influenced by traditional music. He brings the beauty of Vietnamese music to the world, but given his hectic schedule, he has very few chances to perform to audiences in his hometown. It has been 7 years since he played in Vietnam by the invitation of French Embassy. This is the first and only time until now that he has played in Vietnam. This performance as part of the Rooftop’s “Music on the roof” series will be the milestone for his career in Vietnam.

Rock and Metal Music Night
Fri 08 Jul 2011, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi
It is a show all about the births, deaths, and rebirths of bands with a line up that will make any local rock music fan’s eyes water. 4 bands will perform in this Friday night including SKY BURIAL, NURANIUM, FINAL STAGE and PRIMATE WEPT.
More information about 4 bands
Witness the birth and death of SKY BURIAL in the blink of a bat’s eye this Friday night. The trio who play psychedelic / stoner / doom metal are made up of RYAN CHITTICK from Commens on drums (USA), Brendan Baylor (USA) on guitar/vocals, and Bush Lam from A.K.A.T on bass/vocals (Vietnam).
The band will play ONLY ONE SHOW EVER. But could it be the show that rock fans of the capital are talking about for years to come? Will you be able to say “I was there”?
NURANIUM are a band who need no introduction. Nearing their third birthday, these guys have steadily established themselves as one of the must see metal bands in Vietnam. Known for their vigorous on stage antics, Nuranium never fail to impress in the live arena.
Adding to the bill is PRIMATE WEPT – formed by 3 headbangers from our great original band in Hanoi, Gibbon Suburbia. As usual the band will continue to bring their unique electric eclectic sound to rock HRC stage.
And finally, the rebirth of FINAL STAGE. The boys have kept us waiting but this reunion performance of the band has got us hyped! It is a delight to welcome back one of Hanoi’s heaviest and most revered metal bands.

Exhibition “A Physical Obedience Of A Certain Geometry”
Opening: Tue 05 Jul, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 05 – 30/07/2011
Galerie Quynh, 65 De Tham, District 1, HCMC
Galerie Quynh is pleased to present A Physical Obedience Of A Certain Geometry [Nihil Sublime], an exhibition of new work by French artist Thierry Bernard-Gotteland. This is Bernard-Gotteland’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.
Bernard-Gotteland continues to draw on the mythologies of heavy metal music and culture to create this latest body of work. His works are loaded with semiotic markers of defiance, destruction, order, control and power where social roles, cultural models and moral values are examined. Installed in accordance to the Golden Mean, the works possess a symmetry and harmony that belies their violent and aggressive titles. Incorporating text, image and sound, the exhibition is part intimate, domestic space, part aftermath of a live concert and part private fantasy. A faux leather bed dangling from the ceiling, metal chains, paintings of viscous black enamel, stage lights arranged in a pentagram, text from Hollywood scripts fashioned with black duct tape, a tree branch bandaged with tape, the whirring sound of industrial fans whose movement creates discordant noise from a guitar lend the exhibition a sexy, sensual and forbidden atmosphere.
The artist states, “Plato describes humans as prisoners living chained up in Allegory of the Cave. Everything we see – shadows thrown onto the wall in front of us, screenings taking place in the cinema, in the television room, in the bedroom and also in the garage (rehearsal) – become our everyday life. Those spaces become metaphors of our daily life where dreams, nightmares and phantasma are projected to being the building blocks of such hyperreal construction. The layout of the installation is formally related to those spaces where the viewer’s body becomes the ‘personae’ of such territories.”
About the artist: Thierry Bernard-Gotteland was born in 1974 in Chambéry, France. He received his MFA from the School of Fine Art in Grenoble and a Post-Diploma at Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Art in Tourcoing where he worked with acclaimed artist Antoni Muntadas. Bernard-Gotteland has exhibited in North America, Europe and Asia. Recent exhibitions include To Ho Chi Minh City with Love: A Social Sculpture – a project by Phong Bui, San Art, Ho Chi Minh City and the sound performance Untitled [DelayedDustScreens] at The Cage, Labo Wonderful, Ho Chi Minh City. The artist is also a lecturer in the design department at RMIT University in Ho Chi Minh City. He lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City.

IndiVisual Music Night
Sat 09 Jul 2011, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi
You are invited to IndiVisual music night at Hanoi Rock City. DJ Cache (Synergy) and VJ Oska have teamed up to inject Hanoi with a lethal dose of music and video collaboration, with live music from new indie/rock band on the block, Good Mouth Feel.
They’ve prepared the music and the visuals, now all we need is you, the individual.
Influences of the night will include… The Strokes, The Cure, TV on The Radio, Peaches, Radiohead, Pheonix, The Clash, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Friendly Fires, The Killers and so on …then progressing into the electronic remix avenue… Boyz Noise, Daft Punk, Justice, Ladyhawk, Streetlab, The Presets and more.
Feel free to dress up or down for the event, as the name suggests we want individuals not lemmings. So pull out those costumes, spray on some black jeans or just come as you are…
Inthemix: Since relocating to Hanoi from Australia, Cache has been getting busy at a menagerie of events with Synergy and Link Hanoi. He’s also played at the Future Shorts exhibit at Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival and recently performed at C.A.M.A Festival on the electronic stage.
In 2001, Cache moved to London where he witnessed how influential the DJ movement was becoming and started collecting vinyl. Today he’s an eclectic performer inspired, but by no means limited to the organic rhythms of Quantic, the playful jazzy wobble of Mr Scruff, the pounding dubstep of Bassnectar and the prolific dancehall vibes of remixer/producer Diplo.
Prior to relocating to Hanoi, Cache was a resident of X&Y Bar (winner of Best Music Venue in the 2010 Australian Bar Awards) and has literally spent the better part of 10 years earning his dj stripes either locked away in a studio or performing at countless house parties, bars, clubs and festivals.
