The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents an exhibition “JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters” in Hanoi, Hue and HCMC. From Ultraman to Hello Kitty, Japanese popular characters come to Vietnam.

In recent years, a subculture related to Japanese anime and manga has rapidly attracted worldwide attention. To make the most of this trend, we brought this exhibition which examines characters as one radical aspect of this subculture.

Used unhesitatingly by both adults and children in private and public spaces, before we realize it, these characters have become a part of our daily landscape. One finds, for example, characters printed on bank passbooks and train commutation passes, and as indicated by the regular and seemingly natural presence of stuffed mascots at local police boxes, they have permeated everyday life in Japan to a degree that would be unthinkable in most other countries.

What exactly is a character? Why are they so popular? What kind of society do these characters reflect and what kind of influence do they exert on that society? And finally, where is Japanese character culture headed?

In this exhibition, all stars of popular characters ranging from Astro Boy, Ultraman, Hello Kitty, Doraemon, Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Pokemon, Haruhi Suzumura, to Sentokun, Hikonyan, Namisuke, are exhibited through standing figures, panels, and DVDs, to introduce the intimate relationship between characters and Japanese people.

We hope that the visitors will gain a better understanding of the cultural and historical background behind the Japanese love of characters as well as the future of characters in contemporary Japan.

This exhibition starts at Vietnam University of Fine Arts in Hanoi from Thursday 6 to Sunday 23 October, followed by at Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hue from Wednesday 2 to Sunday 13 November, and at Ho Chi Minh City Museum in Ho Chi Minh City from Friday 25 November to Sunday 4 December.

“In 2 recent years, Le Cat Trong Ly has created her fame in the Vietnamese music scene. With her natural curly hair, the tan skin, and her own unique style, Ly has created for herself a composition style different from the Japanese or Korean style. She writes lyrics from sorrow balade to slow such as Jealous…. Influenced by the folk songs of the North, the girl from Da Nang city has presented in her songs something so simple. Ly plays the acoustic guitar and violin perfectly, and she sometimes plays with the percussion. On stage, she shines through her voice and the endearing lyrics (from Le Courrier du Vietnam Newspaper).

Exhibition “Ideal Fall”

Opening: Thu 06 Oct, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 06 Oct – 19 Nov 2011
Galerie Quynh, 65 De Tham, District 1, HCM City

Galerie Quynh is pleased to present Ideal Fall – an exhibition of photography, painting and installation by Hoang Duong Cam. This much anticipated exhibition, developed over a period of four years, reflects the artist’s ongoing examination of idealism and its effects on reality in present-day Vietnam. Considering Plato’s Theory of Forms, Hoang investigates the roots of idealism and questions how our thoughts, chronic habits and (outmoded) customs are formed.

Though the artist’s trademark humor and irony is evident in Ideal Fall, the exhibition reveals a new maturity in Hoang’s practice. Hoang is now looking inward to create a highly personal series of works that illustrate contemporary Vietnamese society in all its complexity. Inspired by the life of his father, Hoang began to ponder the idealism of his father’s generation and how it mitigated the hardships of war. Beauty existed in romantic nostalgia and served as an alternative temporality; dreams of civilization and modernity brought freedom.

The Weirdness of an Ideal Mind series depicts distorted, imaginative scenes of the circus and magic shows, hinting at the oddities and chaos of reality. The paintings are a satire on the ideal world of those  who wish to escape from reality. Each painting is coupled with a wire paper sculpture that is covered in concrete. The absurd sculptures seem to anchor the idealistic scenes in reality, representing the heaviness of thought. An interesting addition to the painting sculpture duo, in the form of burned workers’ protective uniforms, is the reference to Tatlin’s Monument to the Third International, a utopian structure embracing modernity. Designed as the headquarters of the international communist organization following the Russian Revolution in 1917, it was a spectacular vision that was never realized.

While delving into the sources of idealism, Hoang began recalling the myths and stories of U Minh Forest, a mangrove forest in the south of Vietnam notorious for its revolutionary past. Once occupied by criminals, renegades, Chinese refugees, pirates and soldiers, the forest is metaphor for the confused state of the ideal mind. U Minh literally translates as a dark place but the word usually refers to a state of mind, which could signifty anything that is not clearly understood. It could be a chaotic, unclear or confused state. The Lightning in U Minh Forest paintings are complex, fantastical stories that offer insight into the present state of Vietnam through examining its past.

Born in 1974, Hoang Duong Cam studied at the Hanoi Fine Art University. Hoang is one of Vietnam’s most important artists of the post-doi moi generation. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and biennales in Asia, North America and Europe. Recent exhibitions include Representation in the Meaning of a metaphor for a forest as endoscopy / links between locations, Project Space and Spare Room Gallery, School of Art, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia; VideoZone 5, the 5th International Video Art Biennial, Tel Aviv, Israel; Daegu Photo Biennale, Daegu, South Korea; Arts and Cities, Aichi Triennale, Nagoya, Japan; Connect: Art Scene Vietnam, ifa Galerie Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany. Other noteworthy exhibitions include Fluid Zone, Jakarta Biennale, Indonesia; Post-Doi Moi: Vietnamese Art.

After 1990, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou, China; Migration Addicts (Mogas Station), a collateral event of the 52nd Venice Biennale,Venice, Italy; Thermocline of Art. New Asian Waves, ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, Germany; and Belief (Mogas Station), Singapore Biennale 2006. Hoang Duong Cam has been living and working in Ho Chi Minh City since 2001.

This exhibition is a celebration of more than a decade’s work by MAG in Vietnam, and at the same time to highlight that there is a still an ongoing and future need for the clearance of explosive remnants of war in Vietnam.

About photographer Sean Sutton: For more than 20 years Sean Sutton has been travelled around the world to document the lives of people during and after conflict through the lens of a camera. From 1989 to 1991 he photographed the Karen in Burma and then for the next five years Sean repeatedly travelled to the former Yugoslavia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Angola, Albania and Laos.

As well as the international press, Sean also regularly worked with aid agencies covering a range of aid and development themes. By 1993, and as a result of his first-hand experiences, Sean had taken the decision to focus on landmines and always managed to spend time photographing the subject whatever the assignment.

For the last fourteen years Sean has worked with the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and has travelled constantly from such countries as Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Vietnam and Sudan, documenting the humanitarian impact of landmines, unexploded munitions (UXO), small arms and other deadly remnants of conflict and the solutions that MAG provides.

At the Festival of European Languages, representatives of the participating institutions will present their languages in the classrooms and the library of the Goethe-Institute: several 30-minute mini-courses in German, English, French, Spanish, Hungarian and Italian will be offered at multiple morning and afternoon appointments. Instructional materials such as posters, picture books, short films are available for viewing, and will whet your appetite to learn more about the different countries. Visitors thus have the opportunity to get a sample of several language courses, to learn their first words in a new language and to gain an impression of the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.

In the classrooms and the library of the Goethe-Institut Hanoi from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Festival of European Languages will take place with the participation of the following European languages: English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian and Spanish.

Every half hour there will be special events in two languages, for example, language sampler courses, songs and puzzles, illustrated by film footage and posters.

This event not only intends to represent diversity but also aims to demonstrate the importance of multilingualism, particularly for relations with Europe today. Those who, in addition to their mother tongue, speak not only English but also another European language, can also benefit from this advantage in economic and business relations with Europeans. This can be an important factor, especially for an exporting nation like Vietnam.

No registration is required for the Language Festival.

“The Future” Music Night

Sat 08 Oct 2011, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi

Sitting around on sofas, bemoaning a lack of a music scene in Hanoi has become a thing of the PAST! Hanoi Rock City is thrilled to present on Saturday 8th October: THE FUTURE. Three young bands who have the spirit to change everything.

A.K.A.T: flying up from Ho Chi Minh City for their hat trick performance at HRC! These psychedelic, stoner rockers are back from the grave for the first time since vocalist/bassist Bush relocated to Hanoi. Since then, the A.K.A.T trio have been involved in various music projects – Bush pursuing his DJing, Moe became one half of Moeth, and fashion designer to opening a shop. Still, when rock calls, these lads cannot resist. Quite likely one of the most important live bands you will see play in Vietnam.

GỖ LIM: with a change in band members, a modified name (previously known as Golem), and a whole bunch of new material under their belt, Gỗ Lim are asserting themselves as Vietnam’s answer to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Lyrically unique and damn right sexy, particularly with the introduction of captivating front woman Nhí, Gỗ Lim will be the ones to keep your eyes on in 2012. You read it here first.

RE-CYCLE: popular and entertaining, Re-Cycle are an alternative rock band who know how to work the crowd. Handpicked to play the C.A.M.A festival in 2010, Re-Cycle have rocked various big stages and released a couple of EPs and singles, including Vượt qua… the official music video was filmed in Hanoi Rock City!

Photo Exhibition by Sibylle Bergemann

Photography: “I’m interested in the edge of the world, not in the middle”
Opening: Tue 11 Oct, 6 pm
Lecture “Sibylle Bergemann and the photography of GDR“ by Matthias Fluegge: Wed 12 Oct, 6 pm
Exhibition: 12 Oct – 12 Nov, 9 am – 6 pm
Goethe Institute, 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi

The Goethe-Institut Hanoi is pleased to invite you to the photo exhibition by Sibylle Bergemann. The opening will take place on Tuesday, 11 October at 6 pm in the exhibition hall of the Goethe-Institut Hanoi and will be on display until Saturday, 12 November 2011.

Sibylle Bergemann, who died in November last year, was one of the most important and progressive photographers of the GDR. Her timeless portraits and fashion photographs for the magazine “Sibyl” created style icons for an entire generation.

Next to the fashion in her photos she was also able to critically reflect the social developments of her time. Many of her photos have made history. Such as the picture of the two Graces, posing in beach chairs with mouths turned down and thus setting a counterpoint to the feminine ideal in the GDR. With her photos, Sibylle Bergemann documented the desire for freedom and the creative potential that could develop in spite of political restrictions, for example in the field of fashion.

Her portrait photos also show that Sibylle Bergemann was a sensitive observer. Whether rock star Nina Hagen with her mother, or the series of mentally disabled actors, the people in her photographs are presented with dignity and authenticity and always meet the highest aesthetic standards.

Sibylle Bergemann created and documented a piece of German history, and to this day her work has not lost its relevance and is valued internationally. Be there when these excellent photographic exhibition opens at the Goethe-Institut next Tuesday.
