Van Ho Exhibition Center

02 Hoa Lu Street, Hanoi

Hanoi Sound Stuff is back in April with an impressive list of international artists hailing from Germany, UK, Belgium and France.

Mijk van Dijk lives and works in Berlin. He was one of the first artists to emerge from the early Berlin Techno scene in 1990 and in 1992 Mijk mixed Techno beats with emotive sounds and together with Cosmic Baby coined the term „Trance“.

Mijk van Dijk is now merging all his musical strengths into a sound of House, which includes his love for Boogie beats and basslines as well as his old school expertise and his trademark sounds from a musical career of over two decades.

After stumbling across Good Guy Mikesh and making an edit of his track ‘Freddy’ – Maceo Plex delved deeper into the back catalogue and decided he was bona fide Ellum material…

One demo request later and the ‘From Another World EP’ was born.
A trio of original tracks, one of which features production partner Filburt, it’s dark, beautiful and warm music for cold winter nights.

Mica Levi, known by her stage name Micachu (born 1987), is an English singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. She is classically trained and is best known for her band Micachu & The Shapes and for experimental music in a variety of genres ranging from Pop, Alternative to Grime and Grindie.

One of France’s foremost electronic musicians, Joakim has a background in classical music, indie-rock and jazz. He discovered electronic music after a schoolfriend left his synthesizer in Joakim’s room, later latching onto indie and electronic labels such as Warp and Mo Wax.

His first album, Tiger Sushi, was ambient electro-jazz, before he moved onto electronics with Fantômes (2003), and most recently Monsters and Silly Songs (2007), on which he combines post-rock, disco, electronics, and out-there sounds.

Multi-instrumentalist , producer and songwriter Benjamin Schoos is concentrating his efforts into producing lush, string-laden, melancholic and very romantic French pop. Benjamin has created a rich, rhythmic FM pop sound drawing on the glossy melody and soaring synthesizers of ’70s soft rock with orchestral flourishes taken from the best of French cinema soundtracks.

Micachu, Benjamin Schoos and Joakim will be playing the first night while Good Guy Mikesh and Mijk van Dijk will be rocking the stage on the second night, make sure you secure your spot before the tickets run out!

SAKURA – Expression by 13 Japanese Female Artists

Sakura

03 – 07 Apr 2014

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Part 1: Expressions by 13 young Japanese female artists

Although different in choices of materials, styles and areas of interest, the 13 young artists in this show all share one thing in common – a continuous devotion to express themselves only on canvas, using languages from contemporary art, illustration and textiles. Like the air of an early morning in spring, the works on display here beautifully capture and depict the lightness and tranquility of the season of love. We hope that you too will feel the spring in the air.

Part 2 “A Japanese Tradition with illustration”

“Chusen” – a traditional Japanese technique of dyeing cloth is becoming rare nowadays. In an attempt to revive “chusen” and to approach younger generations, a company is using the technique to produce “tenugui” – a type of multi-purpose handkerchief with modern patterns which can be used not only to wipe, but also to wrap presents or as a scarf, helping you make a more unique fashion statement. The artists have collaborated with the company to design and produce “tenugui” handkerchiefs especially for this show, which will be available to purchase at the venue. Accent your daily life with a touch of Japanese tradition combined with contemporary art in the form of a beautiful fashion garment.

UK Artist Micachu at Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival 2014

Fri 11 Apr 2014, 6 – 10.30 pm

Vietnam National Museum of History

In the framework of Hanoi Sound Stuff 2014, Micachu from UK will be one of international artists participating in this festival.

Mica Levi, known by her stage name Micachu (born 1987) is an English singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. She is classically trained and is best known for her band Micachu & The Shapes and for experimental music in a variety of genres.

Levi performed as a DJ in London, and released a mixtape titled Filthy Friends, which was posted on her official Myspace page. For Filthy Friends she enlisted the help of friends and musicians of various backgrounds including MCs Baker Trouble, Brother May, Man Like Me & Ghostpoet, singer-songwriter Jack Peñate, jazz band Troyka, London pop-band Golden Silvers as well as producers Kwes and Toddla T. Following its release, Filthy Friends became sought after on the London club scene.

While a student at Guildhall, Levi was commissioned to write an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra which was performed at the Royal Festival Hall in April 2008.

Levi was an Artist-in-Residence at the Southbank Centre in London in 2010.

Levi co-wrote and produced Tirzah’s I’m Not Dancing EP, which was released by Greco-Roman Records in August 2013, to critical acclaim.

Levi composed the soundtrack to Under the Skin, a film directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Scarlett Johansson, scheduled for release in March 2014. The film is based upon the eponymous novel by Michel Faber.

Micachu and the Shapes

Levi formed a band called The Shapes, which includes Raisa Khan on keyboards and Marc Pell on drums. They signed to Accidental Records. With the Shapes, Levi’s focus has been on experimental pop music. Most of this music prominently features an acoustic half-guitar with various non-standard tunings, extensive distortion, and use of noise and found-object elements, as well as occasionally unusual time signatures. Despite these experimental leanings, the artist categorizes her output with The Shapes as pop music.

Their debut album, Jewellery, produced with influential electronic musician Matthew Herbert, was recorded around Mica’s composition studies at Guildhall School. Advance copies of the record reached the press in early 2009, and generated positive feedback. In the wake of this growing buzz, Micachu and the Shapes were signed to Rough Trade, who released Jewellery on 9 March 2009. Drowned In Sound consequently hailed the record as “thrillingly improbable pop made by a grade-A maverick.”

In 2009, the band received a grant from the PRS for Music Foundation.

Micachu and the Shapes toured widely throughout the UK in 2008, including performances at Bestival and V Festival. The band played in the US at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and SXSW in Austin, Texas. They also performed on the Main Stage of the Siren Music Festival at Coney Island in Brooklyn in July 2009. Touring continued throughout Europe and North America in the summer and fall of 2009. In Spring of 2010, Micachu and the Shapes supported Spoon on tour throughout North America.

The band performed with the London Sinfonietta at Kings Place, London in May 2010 and in March 2011 released the live recording as the album “Chopped and Screwed”. Unlike their previous effort, the recording largely avoids pop sensibilities in favor of a slower, hip-hop indebted style and repetitive, discordant string arrangements. The band were chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival that they curated in May 2011 in Minehead, England.

In April 2012 the band announced that the follow-up to their debut, Never, would be released on the 23rd of July 2012.

We also feel privileged to have 3 shows at Tay Thai Hoa and Cung An Dinh stages at festival prime time. We very much look forward to this international cultural exchange in this beautiful, ancient city.”

“Besides performing at the Hue Festival, the Australian Embassy is pleased to present DeepBlue at the Voice of Vietnam theatre so that people in Hanoi have to chance to enjoy their unique show. We are also organising two workshops with Vietnamese and international music students in Hanoi. We hope that DeepBlue’s performances will encourage young musicians to explore new and creative ways to perform.” said HE Mr Hugh Borrowman, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam.

DeepBlue, Australia’s string-rock sensation, remix originals, pieces from around the world and Aussie classics with lush strings, big beats and rock n’ roll. There’s no conductor, there’s no music stands for the performers to hide behind, it’s all about performing and allowing the audience to get a more intimate sense of the music. The visual and theatrical elements interact with the music and through the performers to make up the total DeepBlue experience.

DeepBlue has a unique way of communicating with audiences using their ground-breaking web app, the Electronic Show Programme (ESP). Audiences use mobile devices to access the ESP that is full of info about DeepBlue’s music and opportunities to communicate their feelings about the Who Are You show and to share who they are. Using this they received 10,000 responses (1 every 2 seconds) in their recent Brisbane shows.

German Artists at Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival 2014 and HCMC

Festival Day 2 with Good Guy Mikesh and Mijk van Dijk: Sat 12 Apr 2014, 6 – 10.30 pm

Van Ho Exhibition Center

HCMC: Concert with Good Guy Mikesh: Fri 11 Apr 2014, 9 pm

The Observatory

For the seventh time, Hanoi’s basses and amps will be turned up for new electric sounds. Like since the beginning, the Goethe-Institut will be in as supporter. We invite you to an extraordinary and experimental, at times poppy Music Live Event.

The Hanoi Sound Stuff (HSS) Festival has been founded by the sound pioneer Tri Minh in 2008 and is the first international electronic festival in Vietnam. Until today, Tri Minh manages the annual mega event that has become an institution in Hanoi. Besides offering a platform for Vietnam’s small but explosive electro scene, the HSS stands for an active exchange between European and Vietnamese artists.

The two main events in 2014 will be a sit-down electronic event with a mix of British, Belgian, French and Vietnamese artists on the first day, and a DJ dance event together with some of Vietnam’s best electronic/sounds artists on the second day. Two German solo artist will be present at that day as well: Good Guy Mikesh and Mijk van Dijk. In musician circles, the Leipzig based Good Guy Mikesh is known to be a prodigy, the guy with the perfect pitch, variable, precisely arranging and always one step further. On 11th April, Good Guy Mikesh will also perform in “The Observatory” in Ho Chi Minh City. Another visionary and living legend is Mijk van Dijk. He was one of the first artists to emerge from the early Berlin Techno scene. Today, he is celebrated for his unique sounds far beyond Germany.

Over the last couple of years, Michael Schiedt has gained to be a prodigy: His productions as Good Guy Mikesh drop one sure shot after the other, some call him Leipzig’s Timberlake, a virtuoso of a debonair arrogation. He was performing live a lot, mostly as One-Man-Pop-Electro-Soul-Band, but he has also built up a solid discography with his DJ-partner Filburt. From this point, he could’ve chosen the easy way. He could’ve taken his insights into Space Disco and House and produce himself into the Decks-charts, entertaining dance floors every other day. But that just wouldn’t be enough. Every move Mikesh makes is about Pop music. Not for the self-purpose of the big gesture, but the devoted handling of this universal language’s rules. A language that Mikesh is speaking flawlessly, in all dialects you could imagine, be it R’n’B, Disco or New Wave.

Michael van den Nieuwendijk aka Mijk van Dijk is a living legend: Already in the 80s, when electro was only played in top secret abandoned cellars, the Berlin artist has discovered his passion for synthesizers and drum computers. It was his unique mix of hard beats and emotive melodies that have coined the term “Trance” – a music that today carries away masses of millions. With his rich and hypnotizing pieces, Mijk has been touring worldwide and developed an especially strong bond with Japan, where he is celebrated one of the best DJs worldwide. In the past couple of years, he has revisited his first love Funk and now merges all his musical strengths into a sound of House, which includes his love for Boogie beats as well as his old school expertise and his trademark sounds from a musical career of over two decades.

In the first week of youth month, you are invited to the screening of The Spectacular Now (7.30 pm Fri) and You’re the Apple of My Eye (2 pm Sat).

About films

The Spectacular Now (2013)

Language: English with Vietnamese subtitles

THE SPECTACULAR NOW is a funny, compassionate and poignant look at young adulthood, written by (500) DAYS OF SUMMER scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, directedby James Ponsoldt (SMASHED) and produced by Tom McNulty, Shawn Levy, AndrewLauren and Michelle Krumm.

This adaptation of Tim Tharp’s novel The Spectacular Now captures the insecurity and confusion of adolescence without looking for tidy truths. Young actors rarely portray teens with the maturity that Teller and Woodleydisplay, and they are phenomenal together.

You’re the Apple of my Eye (2011)

Language: Standard Chinese with Vietnamese subtitles

YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE (Chinese: 那些年,我們一起追的女孩, literally “In Those Years, The Girl We All Went After”) is a 2011 Taiwanese Romance film. It is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Taiwanese author Giddens Ko, who also made his directorial debut with the film.

The lyrics of “Those Years”, the film’s main theme, written by Giddens, was well received by the public and was nominated for Best Original Film Song at the 48th Golden Horse Awards. Well received by film critics, the movie set box-office records in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Ko Chen-tung won the Best Newcomer award at the Golden Horse Awards for his role in the film.

The film stars Ko Chen-tung as Ko Ching-teng, a prankster and a mischievous student who eventually becomes a writer. Michelle Chen stars as Shen Chia-yi, an honor student who is very popular amongst the boys in her class.

Ko-Teng has several close friends who had a crush on Shen Chia-Yi. Those friends of Ko’s thus moved in unison from Ching Chengs junior high school straight into the senior high school division in pursuit of her. Naughty in nature, Ko was ordered by their homeroom teacher to sit in front of honor student Shen for her to keep close tabs on him. The two hadn’t hit it off at first but Ko gradually fell for Shen, who was always pressuring him to study hard. On the other hand, Shen became impressed by the contrasting values Ko represented. Ko started pursuing Shen but Shen remained hesitant.

Adolescence is like a heavy rain. Even though you catch a cold from it, you still look forward to experiencing it once again.

HCMC – ‘Encounter’ Presents Two Lectures by Inrasara

First lecture: The mystery of Cham, an ancient journey | Tue 08 Apr 2014, 6.30 pm

Room NZ0903 (9th Floor)

Second lecture: Open spirit – the Islam of Cham in Vietnam | Thu 10 Apr 2014, 6.30 pm

Rm NZ0204 (2nd Floor)

Hoa Sen University

8 Nguyen Van Trang Street, W. Ben Thanh, District 1, HCMC

Inrasara will unpack the history of the three ancient kingdoms of Vietnam, to remark on why history must acknowledge not only the dominant narratives of the past, but also the smaller, ethnic narratives that are equally significant to the union of a people, of a community, of a nation.

First lecture: The mystery of Cham, an ancient journey

Inrasara will share his research, such as the contribution of the Cham to Vietnamese culture from ancient marine culture during the Champa Kingdom (7th Century-1832), which gives brilliant illustration of these regions connections to present day Japan and Malaysia; to the moral tales of Che Bong Nga and Harok Kah whose folklore to this day provide caution against greed and self-indulgence, to name but a few tales. For Inrasara, uncovering myths and the integrity of literature is to recognize their value in providing meaning and guidance to contemporary life.

Second lecture: Open spirit – the Islam of Cham in Vietnam

The Champa Kingdom (7th Century-1832) expressed great harmony between different faith and peoples. This kingdom was one of three ancient kingdoms in Vietnam, though it is sadly often overlooked for its significance to contemporary understandings of this country. Under the Cham, Vedic Brahmanism (ancient Hinduism), Buddhist and Islamic faith lived together, particularly evident in the architecture of its time. In this lecture, Inrasara will focus on the role of Islam in the open ethos of the Cham, particularly how its beliefs provided means for openness towards difference. He will share the stories of ancient trade of the gypsies; the relationship between architecture and human behavior; questioning also why the Cham were so efficient at business and yet so markedly humble with their profits.

Inrasara was born in 1957 at Ninh Thuan province, Chaklen village, the oldest one of Cham. He started writing poems and collecting traditional literature since high school, and published his first research ‘Cham Literature Outline’ (Sorbonne CHCPI Award), as well as his first poetry collection “The tower of sunlight” (1996, Vietnam Poets Union Award) in his 40s. He also works with several intellects to publish ‘Tagalau’, a unique publication comprising of writings, collections and researches about Cham to preserve the essence of traditional culture. After 12 years in circulation, ‘Tagalau’ has brought many new writers to the national literature forum. While Inrasara works primarily with poetry, in recent years he has taken up essay and literature critique. To him, the purpose of such a “Record Critique” endeavour is to demolish the wall between literature’s ‘external’ genres with its core, fighting for the vocation of all genres for their righteous positions in literature.
