Dream Library Project: Call for Donations and Supports

The Dream Library Project (DLP) donates libraries for children in underfinanced schools and children shelters across Vietnam. By igniting the project, Vietnamese Dream Volunteers (VDVs) is eliminating the inequality in books accessibility among groups of children. We hold a strong belief that having fun with educational books available in donated libraries will encourage reading skill improvement, independent learning, and a lifelong passion for reading.

Formerly known as “Books for mountainous children” or “Books for poor children in Hue”, the project has put thousands of books and stationeries in hand of eager kids in need throughout Vietnam since its introduction in 2011.In 2013, the project initiated new approach going along with new name, that focuses on setting up libraryin everyclassroom called “Dream Library” for easily accessible books.

Simon Starling’s Class Visits Goethe-Institut

25 and 26 Apr 2013, 1.30 – 6 pm and 7 – 9 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội

On April 25th and 26th, Simon Starling and his students invite everyone interested to participate in open workshops and sharing of experiences in the form of a collaborative market, joined by a member of the Superflex artist group, Rasmus Nielsen.

The two-day program:

During both of the days, a “Market” platform is presented. A reading corner with a small selection of books previously published by the students, a viewing station with videos taken by the students in Vietnam during the project, plus an ongoing workshop focused on techniques of building the class’ mobile tent.

The tent, as the central and modular space of the project, is being constructed with bamboo, fabric and principals of Tensegrity (which uses isolated parts compressed within a net of continuous tension to make a very light collapsable structure). As a group of artists each with there own approaches, a continual pressing of the reset button occurs through discussions and questioning the best responses to each step along the way. The tent as on-going process can be re and deconstructed on this occasion for feedback and input from all people in attendance, where questions of participation, conflict and spatiality can also be challenged and negotiated.

At Noon On Thursday and Friday, please join us for a mutual dialogue about experiences and perceptions of public and private space and how they may relate to the street as a dynamic threshold. The Städelschule students, coming from different backgrounds and countries, start with threads that lead from simple activities happening in the streets of Hanoi — like crossing, eating and gathering — which at the first glance appear to be in a contrast with the same activities in Europe. We would like to start from these points to discuss how such activities reflect understandings of urban participation, movements and flows of public/space, and how such activities are respected, demarcated and reflected.
We hope these discussions could shift into a productive activity during the second day of the event, involving the publication and film group of the students and participants.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On Thursday and Friday, two open participatory exercises will take place, during the “Market” hours, focussing on methods of filmmaking and documentation:

1) Visitors will be invited to generate a simple narrative, a story in any form to be told or retold. Basic guidelines for a Goal>Conflict>Resolution system of image-based storytelling will be provided, and participants will create three short images or ‘shots’ that, assembled together represent a narrative whole.
2) Participants will take to the streets of Hanoi, equipped with a ‘wearable’ camera – a device that records a video image from a perspective other than the traditional human ‘eye level’. A set of simple instructions will lead participants through the city, whilst the camera makes decisions of its own.
The results of these exercises will be continually screened for the visitors at Goethe Institute.

On Thursday, there will be a reading session with local writers where any participants are invited to share their writings to be read and discussed together.

25th April:
13.30 – 18.00 | ‘Market’ – different workshops in the courtyard of Goethe-Institut as described above
16.00 – Reading session together with local writers
19.00 | Talk and screening by Rasmus Nielsen (from the artist group Superflex)

26th April:
13.30 – 18.00 | ‘Market’ – different workshops in the courtyard of Goethe-Institut as described above
17 – 17:30 | ‘Terrain Minimalism’ – Audio/Visual Performance by Jol Thomson
19.00 | Filmscreening and discussion between Simon Starling and Nguyen Trinh Thi with Q&A in the courtyard of Goethe-Institut, among others:
- Film by Nguyen Trinh Thi

Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Come to the screening of the quintessential verismo operas: Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.

In the second half of the 1800’s more operas were composed based on principles of French naturalism, called verismo in the Italian tradition. They took as their stories the problems that everyday people dealt with, as opposed to the gods and goddesses, kings and other royalty of opera stories a hundred years earlier. Cavalleria Rusticana, composed by Pietro Mascagni, and Pagliacci, composed by Ruggero Leoncavallo, are short one-act operas and are usually performed together as the double bill CAV/PAG. Both of these operas were composed in the 1890s, both works involve jilted lovers who seek and get revenge on their faithless lovers before the opera ends.

The opera will be screened in the original Italian with English subtitles.

-
Stage Performance Bootcamp
Deadline to register: 02 May
The Black Box

You are invited to register for 2 courses: Workshop of Character-based Improvisation with Robert Marchand and Stage Performance Bootcamp. For more information about the courses, see below:

1. CHARACTER-BASED IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP WITH ROBERT MARCHAND

as used by British Director MIKE LEIGH

(Naked, Secrets & Lies, Vera Drake, Another Year)

A seven day workshop for actors and directors

In contribution to creating changes and diversifying different film making approaches in Vietnam, BlackBox has collaborated with award winning Australian Film director Robert Marchand to bring about an intensive training workshop in Character-based improvisation.

This intensive workshop is a practical investigation of a unique process. It examines Mike’s – and Robert’s – methods from beginning to end in a dynamic, informative and interactive 7-day workshop. It breaks down this process into logical, easily-absorbed steps. Then the actor creates a character during the workshop, building depth and complexity over several days of improvisations and discussions. Finally, the directors film scenes based on the dramatic work created through the workshop.

“Rob’s inventive use of the Mike Leigh process gives actors the opportunity to experience deeply the state of being in character as opposed to acting the character. The actors found the experience incredibly rewarding, for some it changed the way they approached their acting. Rob has an intuitive, supportive and totally non-judgmental way of bringing the best out of any actor and his blend of process and creativity provides not merely an educational experience but a creative journey for the actors which takes them seamlessly to the point of delivering authentic screen performances.” Kim Krejus, 16th Street Acting Studio

“I was rapt that the course was so informative and hands-on.  I thought the blend of the participants was also fantastic and Robert wasn’t too bad a tutor too he he he.  I am armed with lots of ideas to incorporate into the rehearsal and scripting process.” Elissa Down, Film Director ‘The Black Balloon’

With European, there was no Vietnam, just French Indochina through a famous movie INDOCHINA. The term Vietnam was widely known to the world by the War with American.

But after all these History stuffs in Textbook, who is Vietnamese nowadays?

Not too much Soviet-era’s style, Viet Nam now is changing everyday. Still a poor country, but economy grows fast, open relations to all the world. When you talk about Viet Nam now, you have to talk about the changes and no place reflect the changes better than the big cities, or Metropolites…

Web Wednesday is a regular networking event for anyone who works within or are interested to learn about Digital media and Internet industry in Vietnam, and how it can benefit you.

1. Who you are
2. What are you doing now in reference to your topic
3. At what stage is your project/company/startup at?
4. What are you looking for or any areas of expertise you’re seeking.

You have only 5 minutes, so plan your intro properly. The first 10 respondents will be put into a ballot and the chosen 5 names will be notified for presentation. This should be interesting, and mind you, YOU WILL BE CUT OFF AFTER 5 MINUTES. So plan carefully.

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam Design House, proudly present a series of events entitled “Japan Handmade: Crafts & Design from Kyoto” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Kyoto, Japan’s former imperial capital, is worldly famous for the abundance of traditional crafts and craftspeople. Equipped with its long history of tradition, craftspeople in Kyoto have been continuously creating high quality products for generations.

In today’s harsh global market, however, high quality per se seems not to be enough to keep regular patrons attracted to your products. Something extra, novel design for instance, is required. Craftspeople in Kyoto, thus, are also struggling to survive and make their best efforts to develop new products in the context of the globalized market.

In this series of events, such efforts by a collective of young craftspeople, all are young heirs of traditional crafts in Kyoto, will be introduced through an exhibition, lectures and a workshop. Their secrets how to apply the time-honored techniques of Japanese art and craft to create inspiring new designs with contemporary international appeal will be revealed.

The exhibition “Japan Handmade: Crafts & Design from Kyoto” will open at 18:00 on Tuesday 23 April at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hanoi), followed by a talk by Ms. Pham Thi Kieu Phuc (Founder/Designer of Module 7). She will talk about her thoughts on crafts and design, referring to the Japanese crafts and design.

Exhibition “Bonne Nuit” (Good Night)

Opening: Thu 18 Apr, 5 pm
Exhibition: 18 Apr – 02 May 2013
21 NORTH
49 Lang Yen Phu, Tay Ho, Hanoi

“Bonne Nuit” is 5hadows first solo exhibition. It contains a collection of new and unseen drawings inspired by nighttime, dreaming and the unconscious mind.

Bonne nuit (Good night) is the mirror of one’s mind; dreams within dreams, within dreams, within dreams… One can see it as a reflexion on society or, more simply, an interesting creature to look at. It’s up to the viewers to interpret it as they may please. Bonne Nuit is the outcome of what I call automatic drawing. What comes to mind comes on paper; do not think, just keep drawing and dreaming.

The first space includes 3 square columns about 3m height, 45 – 50 cm width, from the ground up to the ceiling of the exhibition. Formed by the straight, solid, dashed bamboo sticks which inspires from the bird cage. In this cramped space there is a lot of birds with different posture and mood, are interlocked and overlapped.

Second space is created by the bamboo sticks connected with others, bending into curves as arcs, and continuously occupy the entire second room which is 80m2 of space. It is expressed as the orbit of the birds with the curve in a big space.

Connection between the two spaces is the experience and thought of the audience.
