Hong Kong – Exhibition “Vietnam Now”
Exhibition: 24 Aug – 09 Sep 2012
Hongkong Land, The Rotunda, Exchange Square, Hong Kong
Vietnam Now portrays a country on the move, a country in great transition, paying homage to the past, living in the present and looking forward into the future.
How to modernize without losing one’s tradition and culture is a dilemma that plagues Vietnamese of all ages and all walks of life. In Vietnam Now, this struggle is given visual expression by six of the country’s most outstanding artists in works that include oil on canvas, painting on silk, bronze sculpture, 3D photography, contemporary calligraphy and performance.
Widely exhibited in Vietnam, these six artists are now emerging on the international stage. Never seen before in Hong Kong, their innovative and thought-provoking works honor and preserve the past while adapting and integrating traditional subjects and techniques in ways that resonate with modern-day audiences.
Although deeply familiar with the traditions of their country, the artists represented in Vietnam Now are confronting issues of rapid modernization and globalization. In their varied and provocative works, they reveal dreams both broken and fulfilled and break new artistic ground as they help drive their country into an international future after decades of isolation.
Ha Tri Hieu- Hope
Ha Tri Hieu, a member of the Gang of Five, one of Vietnam’s most widely known and highly respected artists, works in oil on canvas reveal a culture emerging with hopes and dreams of the future. Nguyen Thi Chau Giang’s signature works on silk explore the issues facing the women of Vietnam today, as they progress on the path to becoming modern. Nguyen Thi Chinh Le’s soulful works of bronze sculpture depict daily life, the trials and tribulations of being alive in today’s complicated world.
Nguyen The Son presents his innovative 3D photographs which examine the impact that rapid development has on the physical and moral landscape of the Vietnamese. A scholar and intellect, Son questions at what price comes this highly touted progress? What are the ramifications of increasing materialism and rampant development?
Le Quoc Viet and Nguyen Quang Thang, members of the avant-garde calligraphy group, Zenei, will exhibit their works of contemporary calligraphy. In addition, as artists and scholars, with a passion to keep Nom, the original language of Vietnam alive, the two will engage the audience in an interactive calligraphy performance. By writing characters in Han Chinese, Vietnamese Nom and abstract forms, the audience and artists will create a work of art that emphasizes the interaction of different cultures and how this interaction creates global modernity.
Le Quoc Viet-This is what I heard
Curated by Suzanne Lecht, of the Art Vietnam Gallery, Hanoi, Vietnam, this is the second exhibition of Vietnamese artists presented by Ms. Lecht and Hongkong Land. In May 1997, the exhibition “The Changing Face of Hanoi” introduced five of the country’s leading artists whose works also reflected the impact of the rapid development as Vietnam was just emerging on the world stage.
The exhibition, Vietnam Now, will be accompanied by a documentary film portraying the lives of the artists – how they live, how they work, and the issues they address, produced by Art Vietnam Gallery in association with documentary filmmaker Bill Perna of Perna Content.

Hue – Exhibition “Mind Scenery”
Opening: Sun 12 Aug, 5 pm
Exhibition: 12 – 17 Aug 2012
New Space Arts Foundation
2nd Floor, Number 15 Le Loi, Hue City
You are invited to an exhibition “Mind Scenery” by artist MI JUNG PARK (Korea). According the artist “Even though time is constantly flowing the hands of a clock will be at the same point at a certain time every day.
Because of this we do not always recognize changes until they have already occurred. In my life I feel it is important to pay close attention to unexpected memories and the reason for their arrival.
Memories often change over time. In my art, I try to capture images and objects before they fade into oblivion.
In my painting, I try to represent the hidden dimension in time. The hidden dimension exists in how our perception and feelings about things change. These uncanny moments are daily occurrences to me. These moments inspire my work.
I have visited many places including U.S.A, Eastern and Western Europe, and a few Asian countries. Through these trips, I have been inspired by both beautiful people and incredible art and realized that art is the most important thing in my life.
I try to show the intense gazes of everyday people in everyday life. These people, scenes, and objects exist as they are seen in the painting for only a brief moment. Often my painting shows the same person sat at the same table only in different chairs and at different time.
I would like to show that this ironic combination of people and objects produces dual spaces and may seem unfamiliar and abstract but its purpose is to be thought-provoking and to explore deeper levels of the dimension of time.”

Screening “Hanoi Eclipse”
Dai Lam Linh 1
Fri 10 Aug 2012, 6.30 pm
Big Hall, Goethe Institut
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
You are invited to the screening of Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh (56 mins, 2010) with Director Barley Norton in attendance. Hanoi Eclipse follows the challenges faced by the controversial Vietnamese band Dai Lam Linh. It shows how the band came together to create a unique form of popular music, which is both international in outlook and rooted in Vietnamese traditions and aesthetics.
Followed by scandal at every turn for their experimental sound and their use of sexually explicit lyrics, the band has dared to flout taboos and fight for their creative freedom.
Dai Lam Linh was established by the male composer, Dai, an ex-soldier who fought in the Second Indochina War (known as the “Vietnam War”), and two female singers, Lam and Linh. The film explores how Dai overcame the trauma of war by writing songs to honour the memory of the war dead and how the singers Lam and Linh embarked on an inner journey to discovery their extraordinary voices.

Music Night “Straight No Mixer”
Fri 10 Aug 2012, 8 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
After a summer break, vinyl lovers in Hanoi are once again invited to drop in and show off their selections for Straight No Mixer. SNM is all about community and providing a place for like-minded people to meet up and play some records. Nobody needs to be able to mix, just bring down some records you love and play them for other aficionados.
Nights typically start off gently with some Jazz courtesy of local sax virtuoso Long, continue with country or low fi classics, pick up an off-kilter groove with the likes of SNM anthem Tainted Dub (which, at around 10 mins long is just not long enough), before getting everybody dancing with a grandstand finish of House and Techno. In between can be dub, reggae, 80s synth pop or whatever else you fine people have got.
All contributions are welcome and you’ll drink free while you play. Eclectic mixes of Chicago House, Hip Hop and Rock’n’Roll have made SNM CAMA’s favourite regular ATK event, the real delight being the stuff we had no idea anybody had and didn’t know we were going to get. Welcome back.
Free entry.

Screening of “Copenhagen Dreams”
Sun 05 Aug 2012, 8 pm
DeciBel Lounge
79/2/5 Phan Ke Binh
Da Kao Ward, District 1, HCMC
The Onion Cellar presents the Ho Chi Minh City screening of Copenhagen Dreams, plus 3 short films by Martin De Thurah.
“A documentary in poetic mode” – Copenhagen Dreams is the portrait that director Max Kestner painted of the Danish capital. The film is exactly what it says on the tin, and then much more. We meet a group of Copenhagen citizens.
They are, amongst others, architects, estate agents, social workers, tire-shop employees, antique dealers, poets, musicians, separated couples, children of separated couples, sons, daughters, and above all – dreamers. We hear about their experiences, sometimes mundane, sometimes surreal: he likes to bike across a snow-covered Kongens Have, she likes to watch the tracks disappearing behind her on the train, he loves taking the ferries when it rains, she loves hearing the rain patter on the Palm House roof.
And what do they dream of? A new larger flat with high ceiling, an Eiffel tower by the lakes, more parks and squares and benches painted Copenhagen-green, buildings that grow out into the ocean…, dreams big and small, realistic and otherwise.
Like Patrick Keiller’s ‘London’, the film is also a ‘city symphony’ about the place that inspires and lives its inhabitants’ dreams. “The people are usually out of focus or on the periphery of the framework that constitutes a central part of the film’s aesthetics. [..]Copenhagen is the main character of the film; the people are just passing bit players whose job it is to draw out the distinctive features of the protagonist. “
Accompanying the film is an original score courtesy of veteran Iceland-born, Copenhagen-based post-classical composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. With Jóhannsson’s subtle blending of the classical and the electronic, the melancholic and the hopeful, the music could easily stand alone in its own right, but works best when placed alongside Kestner’s lyrical cinematography, sometimes even taking on the narration role.
Over the course of 70 minutes, we learn about the essence of Copenhagen. If you have ever sat in the café listening to fragments of conversations around, or felt the nostalgia of the last days in a rented room before moving out, then this is the film for you. It is life itself.
Opening the proceedings are 3 short films about Copenhagen directed by Martin De Thurah (the director who makes music videos for Mew, James Blake, Fever Ray etc). With lush cinematography plus an eclectic selection of soundtrack (Jónsi (Sigur Rós), Mew’s Jonas Bjerre to Chopin and Bach), these shorts add yet another dimension to the portrait of Copenhagen.
Language: the film is in Danish and English (with subtitles in Vietnamese and English).

Music Night with DJ Alefresh
Fri 03 Aug 2012, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
Fresh off the West Coast of the US of A, Alefresh, likes to do things old skool. That’s why we’ll be dusting off the CDJ200s (that’s right, 200s) for a set of Reggae, Hip Hop, Ghetto Funk and House mixed the good old fashioned way, beat for beat, in his only show in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Starting his Dj career in 1999 as “dj shorterm” Alefresh started playing underground house parties in his home state (and the birthplace of techno music) Detroit, Michigan. In 2000 he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and and played parties on the North Shore, at such venues as The Wave and The Maze in Waikiki, and underground parties on the Big Island with long-time companion DJ Rundown playing a mix of reggae, hiphop, breaks, and funky house music.
After playing Burning Man Festival in 2003 he moved California and took a hiatus from his DJ career. He re-emerged as DJ Alefresh and after playing exclusively on vinyl and technics 1200′s he began to incorporate digital music into his sets. Since playing Burning Man 2011, Alefresh has catapulted himself back into the dj scene in the bay area and with his crew based out of Lake Tahoe.
His goal has always been clear – to put forth a seamless mix of genres including reggae, hip hop, ghetto funk, 80′s remixes, and house to get people on the dance floor. Shortly after his set at CAMA ATK, Ale will be heading back to California’s blue skies, so don’t miss out…

Exhibition “Collisions of Clamor and Calm”
Exhibition: 28 Jul – 31 Aug 2012
Galerie Quynh
65 Đề Thám, District 1, HCMC
Galerie Quynh is pleased to present Collisions of Clamor and Calm, the gallery’s summer group exhibition of works by Do Hoang Tuong, Nguyen Manh Hung, Tran Van Thao, Lien Truong and The Propeller Group. Comprised of new and never-before see work, the exhibition also gives visitors the opportunity to view a selection of works recently presented by the gallery at the prestigious Hong Kong International Art Fair in May, 2012.
Respected Ho Chi Minh City-based artist Do Hoang Tuong will be exhibiting two earlier works that display the artist’s strength as a figurative painter. In keeping with his reflections on modern life and the isolation of contemporary living, Tuong’s somber paintings nonetheless celebrate the resilience of the human spirit.
A new addition to the gallery’s roster of artists, Nguyen Manh Hung presents three paintings that illustrate the Hanoi-born artist’s long-held preoccupation with the military. Depicting fighter jet planes soaring across the skies with oversized food items, Hung’s paintings recount the contradictions of present-day Vietnam.
One of the country’s most accomplished abstract artists, Tran Van Thao unveils two Rain in Sunlight paintings that depict the dramatic tropical skies of southern Vietnam during the spring and summer rainy seasons. Dominated by blue, the paintings illustrate the artist’s profound understanding of the local environment and the climatic conditions that characterize the region.
New works by California-based artist Lien Truong include a selection from her Bomb Crater and social camouflage paintings. Exploring the sites of crater bombs that exist in various countries, Lien’s anxious yet elegant landscapes reveal the capacity for renewal amid destruction. Referencing historical or current relations of conflict, the Camo Chronicle paintings address the implication of culture in geo-political conflicts.
Ho Chi Minh City and Los-Angeles based art collective The Propeller Group (formed in 2006 by Phunam, Matt Lucero, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen) present three Collision panels from their most recent body of work entitled Static Friction. Using glossy and colorful vinyl decal stickers, the artists have created vibrant and surprising compositions that celebrate the rich aesthetics and complexities of motorbike culture.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Koto Co., Ltd, shares the delight of introducing cute and charming toys created by “twelvetone” (Designer: Takashi Tsunoda) through the design exhibition “The World of Interior Toy” from August to September 2012 in Hanoi.
Music is composed only with 12 (twelve) tones but the combination of the tones is almost infinite. It implies that there are a lot of complicated things in the world, but the essence within the things is very simple, just like twelve-tone in music.
Go back to the origin of the simplicity and create things. This is the design philosophy of Takashi Tsunoda (twelvetone) who has won the Good Design Awards of Japan twice for his interior toys. His products are all simple but cute and adorable with a variety of characters.
Piperoid (Good Design Award 2007) is a paper robot craft kit for both kids and adults. All you need is a pair of scissors. No glue, no tape. Just cut, fold, and connect the pipes to build your own robot with movable joints in less than 30 minutes! Each character has a unique background story, and after assembly it can be used as an accent for home or office décor and even as a memo holder.
Play-deco (Good Design Award 2011) is a unique craft for home décor that combines wooden “bone” with paper “skin.” Each package includes paper texture sheet and wooden bone sheet that is perforated and precut so there are no tools required – not even scissors!
Apart from such award-winning toys as Piperoid and Play-deco, Monster Cube which Tsunoda created by the inspiration from traditional Japanese handicrafts, will be all displayed.
The opening of the exhibition starts at 14:00 on Saturday 11 August with the designer’s talk “How to design kawaii (cute) characters” at the Japan Foundation Exhibition Hall (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). The workshops to make interior toys will be also held at 15:00 and 16:30 on the same day at the same place.
We hope that this exhibition will be a good showcase of excellent design from Japan and you will enjoy the world of interior toys by twelvetone.
Free of admission but registration is required for the workshops.
