Shadow Play: Electro Acoustic Cải Lương
Thu 15 Aug 2013, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
Two of Vietnam’s most promising young musicians, Lương Huệ Trinh and Nguyễn Thùy Dung have teamed up with Đào Văn Trung for a re-working of Cải Lương.
Not the cheeriest genre at the best of times, Cải Lương – a blend of folk and classical used in theatre – is about to be dragged through the dark innards of modern electronic music by Lương Huệ Trinh. The young contemporary musician has ably lent her moody soundscapes to The Onion Cellar’s Musick to Play in the Dark and tracks like Black Circle and Black Moon cement the running theme of her delicately arranged electro acoustic compositions.
Joining Trinh will be award-winning violinist Đào Văn Trung and đàn tranh player Nguyễn Thùy Dung. Trung will give a rendition of his Cai Luong inspired composition Hồn Việt (Vietnamese Soul). Adding colour to everything will is the ever-excellent Nguyễn Thùy Dung who brought Contemporary Ca Trù to ATK last month.
Together they’ll be condensing Cai Luong’s theatrical history into their modern interpretation of the genre to bring the audience a score that reflects the highs and lows of their personal stories.
If you liked Contemporary Ca Trù, you’re in for a treat.
Shadow Play: Electro Acoustic Cải Lương
Lương Huệ Trinh (electronics), Nguyễn Thuỳ Dung (đàn Tranh) and Đào Văn Trung (violin)

Metropole Opens a Window Into Hidden Hanoi
After more than a century of refining tastes in the Vietnamese capital, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is unveiling a new cultural itinerary for discerning holidaymakers in 2013.
Designed to steer visitors through the best of charmingly chaotic Hanoi via a series of personalized tours, culinary adventures and historical connections, the Metropole debuted its two-night ‘So Cultural’ package last week, entitled ‘In the Footsteps of Joan Baez.’
The 112-year-old hotel, which has hosted the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Graham Greene, took the route legendary folk singer Joan Baez favored on her March 2013 return to Hanoi as inspiration for its most artistically inclined offering to date.
Guests will be given the keys to the 70-square-metre Somerset Maugham Suite, where Baez stayed and painted her ‘Unnamed’ portrait of a Vietnamese child. The suite’s spacious living room and bedroom retain their classical French architecture and original honey-oak floorboards from 1901.
Outside in the 1,000-year-old city, the ups, downs, influences and intricacies of Vietnam’s fledgling art scene will be explored in a half-day tour led by a local art dealer. Hanoi’s hidden ateliers, prosperous galleries and contemporary exhibits will be revealed alongside its traditional craft mediums of lacquer, silk and clay.
A guided walk through the 36 streets and guilds of Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter will lead guests to places of personal interest -- whether the silk and linen embroidery of Hang Gai, the bamboo instruments and furniture of Hang Hom, or the sidewalk theatre played out in the cafes and tea shops surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake.
The full spectrum of Vietnam’s culinary delights, the finest specialties from North and South, as well as the hotel’s famous ‘pho’ noodle soup will be presented to guests in a spectacular lunch buffet at Spices Garden.
The Metropole’s luxury fleet of BMW 7 Series vehicles will transport guests in style to and from Noi Bai Airport. Club Metropole benefits -- including round-the-clock butler service, express check-in and check-out, complimentary afternoon tea, and breakfast in bed – supplement the on-site experience.
‘In the Footsteps of Joan Baez’ is priced at VND 42,000,000 per night, based on two-night stays. Additional nights will be charged at VND 39,900,000++.

Call for Volunteers: Fighting Wildlife Crime at the Blitz Event
Sat 03 Aug 2013, 1 – 5 pm
Venue: TBC
Join our campaign to combat illegal wildlife trade as we inspect restaurants, bars, and other targeted businesses to identify wildlife violations in Hanoi.
The next blitz will be on Saturday August 3, 2013. We will confirm the venue with you after sign-up. We encourage you to sign up as soon as possible, as numbers are limited and participation is on a first come, first served basis.
Volunteers will receive training on monitoring methods and techniques before the blitz begins. After the monitoring period, teams will return to a set location to turn in their monitoring results, complete any missing information, and debrief.
Those who are interested are welcome to stay on for refreshments and a light meal, as we award the best monitoring teams with small prizes. Post-event activities will end by 9:00 PM.
We hope you will join us to help stamp out wildlife crime and protect Vietnam’s wildlife. Just half a day of your time can make a world of difference and help keep wildlife in nature, where it belongs.
