Documentary Screening about William Onyeabor and Afrobeat Set by Dan Lo
Wed 20 Aug 2014, 8 pm
The Observatory
Corner of Le Lai and Ton That Tung, Dist.1, HCMC
You are invited to the screening of recently-released documentary on the life and music of William Onyeabor – enigmatic, revolutionary and reclusive Nigerian electronic musician who rose to national fame in the late 70s and early 80s before retreating into a life of relative seclusion as a born-again Christian [who is very reluctant to talk about his past].
The name Onyeabor has resurfaced to the consciousness of music lovers globally since Luaka Bop became the first label to release a compilation of his tracks in late 2013. His songs deliver a delicious mix of social, political, religious and emotional messages in a highly unique and analog electronic style, and are a true experience to listen to.
This is a great chance to come and get a taste of the unique techniques Onyeabor was using to craft his signature electronic music during the very early experimental stages of its development as a distinct new approach throughout the world, as well as to dance to a wide selection of African sounds later on in the night via the selections of afro-enthusiast DAN LO.
Free entrance. Screening begins 9pm sharp

About films
Memento (2000)
MEMENTO is a 2000 American neo-noir mystery-psychological thriller film directed by Christopher Nolan. The screenplay was written by Nolan based on his younger brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori”. It stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano.
MEMENTO is presented as two different sequences of scenes: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order. The two sequences “meet” at the end of the film, producing one common story.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is a 2005 American epic romantic drama film directed by Ang Lee. It is a film adaptation of the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Proulx with the screenplay written by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry. The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Randy Quaid, and depicts the complex romantic and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1983.

Berlinale Shorts Go Abroad in HCMC
15 and 16 Aug 2014, 7 pm
Culture Salon Cafe Thứ Bảy
1st Floor, 19B Phạm Ngọc Thạch, Dist. 3, HCMC
The Berlinale Shorts will be presented by the Goethe Institute in nine South-East Asian countries. For the first time they are welcomed by the Goethe Institute in Ho Chi Minh City Shorts in its cultural salon at the 15th and 16th of August at 7pm. Berlinale Shorts will also be presented in Hanoi on 08 and 09 Aug.
In the series “Berlinale Shorts Go Abroad” short films of the International Film Festival of Berlin go on a journey. Ten short movies were chosen to be shown in the Goethe Institute Hanoi at the 8th and 9th of August at 7pm.
“The Berlinale Shorts are a forum for the short form in the festival. A place for uncompromising films, which take an undisguised look on the present. Filmmakers are artists, who are aware of the formal possibilities and furthermore have the whole picture of cinematography in sight. Berlinale Shorts are films, which go beyond the event and contribute to the understanding. At once around the globe and back. The beginning is everywhere and here and now.” Maike Mia Höhne, curator of the Berlinale Shorts, invites the hanoian audience: “Please come and see by yourself!”
This year the short movies deal with very current topics. They range from surreal to real, from marvelous to cruel. The movies discuss a world which changes dramatically and endangers nature. This world forces nature to accommodate itself to it. To be ruthlessly and without morals. But the movies also talk about war and grief: How can you face them? How can you handle them? And what follows?
A highlight of the programs is surely the movie “Three Stones for Jean Ginet” which has already won an award and which will be played on several festivals this year. It is about desire and promises, a city, a friendship and the narration of a hidden story.
The International Film Festival of Berlin, also well-known as Berlinale, is the major film festival in Germany as well as the major audience festival worldwide. Films of all kinds of genre, length and format find a place in the several sections of the Berlinale. (Please find further information here.)

The Aristocrats Live in Vietnam – Culture Clash Asia Tour 2014
Wed 13 Aug 2014, 8 pm
Music Centre 57 Cao Thang
57 Cao Thang, Ward 3, Dist 3, HCMC
The gang of The Aristocrats, of Sirs GG, MM & BB will grace the stage of Vietnam this August 13. To music lovers and instrumental lovers alike, this is definitely an event not to be missed, or merely … waited. The Aristocrats, to those who have learned a thing or two about them, and also to those who have not, you’ll be amazed by what your senses allow for we guarantee.
The word “supergroup” is tossed around a lot in instrumental music circles, the result of a seemingly endless supply of efforts to package together individual virtuoso players and make a band out of them. But every once in a while, the group part of that shopworn term becomes authentic and real. Such is the case with The Aristocrats – guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann – who defiantly and joyously blow the supergroup stereotype to bits, thrilling audiences and fans around the world in the process with a preternatural band chemistry that equals exponentially more than the sum of its parts.
* Guthrie Govan is arguably the hottest guitarist on the international music scene today, and his 2006 solo album Erotic Cakes was widely recognized as an instant classic. His top-level touring experience (Asia/GPS, Steven Wilson) complements his busy schedule as one the most in-demand guitar clinician/educators in the world, and he was featured on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine in July of 2011.
Aristocrats Photo by Alex Solca
* Bryan Beller’s numerous credits include guitarists Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa), and the hugely popular metal “band” Dethlok, borne of the Adult Swim (U.S.) animated TV show Metalocalypse. His solo artist catalog includes three CD’s, two DVD’s, and an instructional DVD for Alfred Publishing, and he was featured on the cover of Bass Player Magazine in October of 2012;
* Marco Minnemann is widely seen by fans and peers as one of the most gifted, innovative, cutting-edge drummers in the world. He’s graced the covers of several drum magazines (including Modern Drummer) and enjoys an ultra-versatile sideman career (Adrian Belew, UKZ, Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani, Necrophagist). Perhaps less known:
He’s a multi-instrumentalist and compulsively productive composer with nearly twenty CD & DVD solo releases to date.
It’s not just fusion. It’s not just shredding. It’s not even meant to be taken seriously at times. It’s just the sound of three guys who did a single pickup gig and suddenly discovered they had something musically deep going on together…along with a propensity for employing R-rated song titles.
So what do you call an act like that? The Aristocrats!
