Screening of “Noise and Resistance”

Tue 28 Aug 2012, 8.30 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

The Onion Cellar continues its monthly film curation at CAMA ATK, this time with an official screening of Noise and Resistance – a documentary about European DIY Punk scene. The screening is the next step on the “alternative” road that has been going through every ATK / Onion Cellar collaboration, from We Don’t Care about Music Anyway to last month’s Black Power Mixtape.

The 21st century. The age of the Money God, multinational corporations and bankers with ridiculously huge bonuses, the age of living your life out in some megalopolis doing mundane jobs (that you hate) until your retirement a few years before your death. Capitalism.

But as they say, “Every heart is a revolutionary cell”. There is always a thriving underground within even the most mind-numbing mainstream.

Noise and Resistance (dir – Francesca Araiza Andrande & Julia Ostertag) takes you straight to that underground. It is a film about DIY Punk, though it concerns itself not with a shallow definition of what Punk music is (it actually appears in various forms in the film: from British sludge metal to Russian underground hip-hop); rather, the film is a detailed exploration of the Punk spirit, of what it means to break free from the mainstream and to live in alternative ways.

Catalonian squatters (who double as festival organizers), anti-fascists in Moscow, queer trailer park inhabitants in Berlin, Swedish feminists, Dutch trade unionists, or members of the renowned British CRASS collective, whether they spend time building self-contained communities in Norwegian woods or touring Europe with their own Mexican cashes – the people that we meet in the film all share the same belief: that there are always alternatives to this reality, and they are by no means unrealistic. It is this attitude and of course the musical bond between them that make the scene look like one big, interconnected family. As CRASS’ Penny Rimbauld puts it: it’s not really “Doing It Yourself” – it’s “Doing It Together”. Even if it sometimes means risking your own life.

Noise and Resistance is an authentic and inspiring film, whether you are a sociologist, a fan of Punk (or music in general), a dreamer, or just someone who is curious about the genuine alternatives out there. The film is claimed to “have the best punk sounds you’ve heard for years” – which is justified. Featuring music and appearances from: Penny Rimbauld and Gee Vaucher (CRASS), Moscow Death Brigade, What We Feel, Seein’ Red, La Casa Fantom, Fall Of Efrafa, Sookee, Antimaster, Sju Svara Ar, Radical Cheerleaders, and many others.

Languages: various European languages – with English subtitles

The works were inspired by the artists’ field trips to Mong Cai city (Quang Ninh province), Tam Dao district (Vinh Phuc province), Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa provinces, Hai Phong and Hue cities and the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago to study the lives of the soldiers stationed there who spend their days and nights protecting the country’ sovereignty.

Con Dao prison, part of the barbaric prison system in the past, was known as ‘Hell on Earth’, where the French colonialists and US imperialists imprisoned and brutally tortured Vietnamese political prisoners.

More than 20,000 revolutionary soldiers sacrificed their lives in Con Dao prison for the cause of national independence and freedom, including martyrs of the revolution such as Le Hong Phong, Nguyen An Ninh and Vo Thi Sau.

Ballroom Blitz Summer Garden Party

Sat 25 Aug 2012, 6 pm
American Club
19 – 21 Hai Ba Trung Str, Hanoi

CAMA rekindle their collaborations with China’s FakeMusicMedia to kiss the summer goodbye with a ballroom blitz garden party at the American Club, Saturday 25 August with a stunning line-up of local and foreign talent.

TICKET GIVEAWAYS: We have 2 x 2 FREE tickets to the Ballroom Blitz Summer Garden Party.

Deadline to register is midnight on Thursday 23 Jun.

Italian disco is the sound of the summer in Hanoi as CAMA lure Italy’s favourite producer, Rodion, to Vietnam’s capital. Since the release of his EP For Ever in 2010, featuring Jeppe Kjellberg from WhoMadeWho, Rodion has been in demand all over Europe. Described by Mixmag as “the new genius of Italian Dance music” and much loved by the likes of Prins Thomas, Lindstrom and DFA Records, the disco cowboy mixes the euphoria of Balearic house with the atmosphere of Morricone’s soundtrack compositions to hip swinging effect. Las Vegas-style slow disco ballads, beautiful Italian melodies, house and futuristic crooner pop are all part of the fun.

In 2007, the moustachioed Roman released his debut album Romantic Jet Danceon Gomma. Since then, Rodion’s singles and remixes have brought his sound to some of the best clubs across Europe, from Moscow to Paris; London to Istanbul. Somewhere between French synthesizer funk and Italian horror movies, Rodion’s sound is at the same time cinematic and danceable. His recent tracks have been released on the some of the world´s finest dance labels like Gomma, Eskimo, Bang Gang and Bearfunk and find themselves in the playlists of people like Franz Ferdinand, Erol Alkan, Andrew Weatherall, James Holden and Cosmo Vitelli.

Kicking off the evening’s entertainment will be One Black Eye. This expat band has been making waves for their rock and roll take on the sea-shanty and all things gutsy. Frontman and songwriter Chad Park’s baritone voice is often rightly likened to Tom Waits or Nick Cave while his lyrics cover some of the same themes as the former: Americana fairy tales of bars fights, empty desserts, gospel chain gangs and lost highways.

Next up is Tri Minh, a man who needs little introduction to Hanoi based lovers of electronic music. Almost single-handedly forging out a home-grown electronic music scene in the capital via his Hanoi Soundstuff music festival, Tri Minh has also won fans for his record Hanoi Love Stories and by playing the biggest parties both in Hanoi and across Europe.

Completing the line-up, CAMA are delighted to showcase VN Tribes. The brainchild of DjY and Mr Pat, VN Tribes are two fantastically talented musicians whose concoctions of House and Vietnamese traditional music has to be danced to be believed. While DjY spins some of the world’s smoothest tracks, Mr Pat works his sampler like a pianist. You can search all you like but you’ll not find anyone else successfully throwing together Dan ca, Hat Ru, Vong Co, Cai Luong, Nhac Tai Tu, Quan Ho, Ca Tru and even the atonal drones of funeral music with dance floor grade beats.

Check out their performance:

Pat: “I am trying to achieve a Vietnamese influenced harmonious new sound. With VN tribes, I feel myself as an experimental architect trying to build a new kind of house. I see the tracks DJ Y plays as the groove and foundation and my part as the melody and interior design. To a certain degree, when both match, we create harmony and we’ve got our hit.”

We’re dusting off the big top ballroom to protect us from the rain, so polish your blue suede; BBQ fun, green-grass dancing and European ballroom disco fever are here to see off the summer at CAMA’s biggest party of the season.

Ticket price: VND 100,000 in advance; VND 200,000 on the door; Free with a Vietnamese Student Card

Hong Kong – Exhibition “Vietnam Now”

Exhibition: 24 Aug – 09 Sep 2012
Hongkong Land, The Rotunda, Exchange Square, Hong Kong

Vietnam Now portrays a country on the move, a country in great transition, paying homage to the past, living in the present and looking forward into the future.

How to modernize without losing one’s tradition and culture is a dilemma that plagues Vietnamese of all ages and all walks of life. In Vietnam Now, this struggle is given visual expression by six of the country’s most outstanding artists in works that include oil on canvas, painting on silk, bronze sculpture, 3D photography, contemporary calligraphy and performance.

Widely exhibited in Vietnam, these six artists are now emerging on the international stage. Never seen before in Hong Kong, their innovative and thought-provoking works honor and preserve the past while adapting and integrating traditional subjects and techniques in ways that resonate with modern-day audiences.

Although deeply familiar with the traditions of their country, the artists represented in Vietnam Now are confronting issues of rapid modernization and globalization. In their varied and provocative works, they reveal dreams both broken and fulfilled and break new artistic ground as they help drive their country into an international future after decades of isolation.
Ha Tri Hieu- Hope

Ha Tri Hieu, a member of the Gang of Five, one of Vietnam’s most widely known and highly respected artists, works in oil on canvas reveal a culture emerging with hopes and dreams of the future. Nguyen Thi Chau Giang’s signature works on silk explore the issues facing the women of Vietnam today, as they progress on the path to becoming modern. Nguyen Thi Chinh Le’s soulful works of bronze sculpture depict daily life, the trials and tribulations of being alive in today’s complicated world.

Nguyen The Son presents his innovative 3D photographs which examine the impact that rapid development has on the physical and moral landscape of the Vietnamese. A scholar and intellect, Son questions at what price comes this highly touted progress? What are the ramifications of increasing materialism and rampant development?

Le Quoc Viet and Nguyen Quang Thang, members of the avant-garde calligraphy group, Zenei, will exhibit their works of contemporary calligraphy. In addition, as artists and scholars, with a passion to keep Nom, the original language of Vietnam alive, the two will engage the audience in an interactive calligraphy performance. By writing characters in Han Chinese, Vietnamese Nom and abstract forms, the audience and artists will create a work of art that emphasizes the interaction of different cultures and how this interaction creates global modernity.
Le Quoc Viet-This is what I heard

Curated by Suzanne Lecht, of the Art Vietnam Gallery, Hanoi, Vietnam, this is the second exhibition of Vietnamese artists presented by Ms. Lecht and Hongkong Land. In May 1997, the exhibition “The Changing Face of Hanoi” introduced five of the country’s leading artists whose works also reflected the impact of the rapid development as Vietnam was just emerging on the world stage.

The exhibition, Vietnam Now, will be accompanied by a documentary film portraying the lives of the artists – how they live, how they work, and the issues they address, produced by Art Vietnam Gallery in association with documentary filmmaker Bill Perna of Perna Content.

Screening of “Please Vote for Me”

Fri 17 Aug 2012, 6 pm
Big Halle, Goethe Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

DOCLAB cordially invite you to the screening of “Please vote for me” by Chinese filmmaker Weijun Chen. Please Vote for Me is a portrait of a society and a town in through a school, its children and its families. Wuhan is a city about the size of London located in central China. A Grade 3 class at Evergreen Primary School has their first encounter with democracy by holding an election to select a Class Monitor. Eight-year-olds compete against each other for the coveted position, abetted and egged on by teachers and doting parents. Elections in China take place only within the Communist Party, but recently millions of Chinese voted in their version of Pop Idol. The purpose of Weijun Chen’s experiment is to determine how democracy would be received if it came to China.

The film is one of ten selected as part of the Why Democracy? project, which saw interpretations of democracy by 10 film makers from around the world broadcast on 42 television networks in October, 2007, to audiences of more than 300 million people in nearly every country in the world. Performance of Japanese Rapper COMA-Chi

Thu 23 Aug 2012, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

Hanoi: CAMA, in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, will bring famous female Japanese rapper COMA-CHI to Hanoi for one night only on Thursday 23 August.

COMA-CHI hit the music scene in 2003, building her reputation through performances in Tokyo and participation in MC Battles. She gained notoriety for her freestyle street rapping and for regularly showing the boys how it’s done on the sidewalk.

It didn’t take long for COMA-CHI to blow up and in 2006, she released her first solo album Day Before Blue. Featuring solid rhyming, and a telling influence from 90s hip hop, the album commanded attention, and got it from the Japanese music charts in its first week of release. In 2007, COMA-CHI’s efforts were recognised by Blast Magazine, who listed her as one of the Ten Future Japanese Rappers to watch.

In July of 2008, COMA-CHI announced that she had signed a record deal with the Knife Edge/Pony Canyon label, and made her major debut in 2009 with the album Red Naked. This was followed up by Beauty or the Beast? in 2010, an album which drew plaudits for COMA-CHI’s singing ability as well as her talent for spitting self-made rhymes. Lately, the queen of Japanese hip hop founded her own management company, Queen’s Room, a move she hopes will give her greater creative control to develop her sound.

COMA-CHI’s performance at CAMA ATK, 73a Mai Hac De will mark her Hanoi debut and the first chance for Hanoi hip hop fans to see the unique sounds of this talented, best-selling rap artist. She’ll be rapping, singing and DJ-ing, only at CAMA ATK.

OSUWADAIKO – A Traditional Drum Troupe from Japan

HANOI: Wed 22 Aug 2012, 8 pm
Youth Theatre
11 Ngo Thi Nham Str, Hanoi

HOIAN: Fri 24 Aug 2012
Song Hoai Square, Hoian

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a drum performance by OSUWADAIKO on Wednesday 22 August 2012 in Hanoi.

OSUWADAIKO is a professional Japanese drum troupe founded in 1951 by the Grand Head Master, Daihachi Oguchi (1924 – 2008). Listed in one of the top 3 Taiko (Japanese drum) troupes, OSUWADAIKO has been actively conducting performances and workshops all over the world, supported by 600 local supporting teams in Japan and international branches in the US, Canada, France, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Thailand and other areas overseas.

In 2009, OSUWADAIKO conducted their performance on the auspicious occasion of the National Celebration for the 20th Anniversary of His Majesty The Emperor’s Accession to the Throne in Japan. In 2011, they participated in the 1st International Tea Festival in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam and caught the highest attention in the festival.

The feature of OSUWADAIKO is its usage of multiple drums in an orchestral style. They took ancient rhythms but broke them down and created new arrangements and compositions to accommodate an ensemble of drummers.

The highlight is the tune entitled “Ashura” which is ogre God in Indian mythology but later became the guardian deity of Buddhism, having three faces and six arms. OSUWADAIKO embosses the daring, brave and bold Ashura with its rhythms and beating rhymes.

In their coming-back tour in Vietnam, OSUWADAIKO will conduct a performance in Hanoi at Youth Theatre (11 Ngo Thi Nham) on Wednesday 22 August, followed by the participation in Hoian – Japan Festival 2012 from 24 – 26 August in Hoian. The performances are free of admission in both cities.

24 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội

Film synopsis: Paris resounds with a thousand noises on the morning of September 5, 1661. Fouquet, the powerful superintendent, is arrested by order of Colbert, and young King Louis XIV takes the throne. While other artists, renouncing their friendship, rush to pay court to the new monarch, a man stands up to affirm his support for the fallen superintendent. He is the poet Jean de la Fontaine. Without money, without resources, he resists, amuses himself, pirouettes, invents the “Fables,” and provocative pamphlets against a despotic and decadent regime. La Fontaine – Colbert: a confrontation that will endure until death. This is the first homage in film to the most popular of French authors; a modern fable about freedom of expression and the ties between art and power.
